In the demo you could get crucibles on their own and they did nothing. I would assume they now always only come when you pick Hermi?
The crucible also gives food each turn.
When you use the mega cauldron, you can buff the crucibles to do different things: act as a poison turret, make buffs last longer (and then give all 3 buffs at once), or give more bread to itself or to all your buildings. Quite a bunch of different directions.
Pretty sure only Hermi gives this playstyle as of now.
