I find that when I hold (rt) throttle down all the way, the car changes gear. I have to be holding it halfway down to accelerate. Anyone know how to fix this?

Can't say i've ever experienced that, you don't have any external apps that might be influentiating the behavior of that button?

nope. Could it be that im using the xbox one presets with an xbox 360 controller. Also when I cant bind RT to anything.

I don't think so. I have run the game with that same setup and not experienced your issue.

The odd part here is why it is triggering change gear when you reach the end of it, it's as if you had 2 commands set to the same controller (which is not possible within our game).
Another possibility is that your controller might have something broken inside which is causing to trigger your gear change key.

Could you try to remap the gear shifting keys to Y and X and set look back option at RB to see if it looks back when you reach the max ?

^^ I wonder how old the controller is? I had a 360 pad that when on it's last legs would spit out random signals. Well, when I say random, it was the same signal, it would do it randomly.

The controller is maybe 10 years old but it has no problem in other games.

@locked I've tried endless combinations of configurations from online and nothing seemed to fix this issue. I've spent an hour or two playing around with it. I've noticed that I cant bind RT to anything.

Thanks for the suggestions. At this point I think I will just reinstall the game and cross my fingers. If that doesnt work, I might pick up a new controller. However, I strongly believe that it is not the controller's fault.

Do you drive with manual or automatic gears? If using auto, try running a practice session with manual gears and see if the behaviour persists.
