That is exactly the point, to race. The developers' time and money have been put into a top-notch physics model, competitive AI, and accurate reproductions of every car and track featured. Unless you're tuning your setup, any time not spent on track is basically time not playing the game.
Leveling up/upgrading cars isn't really THAT fun after the millions of games that have done that already. Getting faster and better at overtaking.. Then making the right calls when to get which tyres when it starts raining etc is way more exciting in the long term imho. :)

I think you are looking for a different kind of game, man.. This one is more like a sim racing game.
If you want more fun, you may try GTAV, there are a lot of races in it. And you can customize your vehicle, and get out of it whenever you like, and you can beat other drivers up, if you like to, or make some good friends.
