There are some things missing today which I hope they can enhance later, like more transmission sounds/whine.
They aren't horrible, but they are nowhere near real. To me they are doable and that's it
Personally, I find the "mix" to be off and miss certain aspects of in car sounds like transmission whine.
Edit: The lower viscosity lubricants used in performance vehicles also contributes to various noises as well. Differential noise, etc.

This pretty much sums it up, fact you can't isolate your own engine from others is a little stupid
The aural treatment of this game seems vague if anything, you're not supposed to hear engines like you do, helmet and pit crew communication obscures this so why the sounds we get in game is a curiousity
Maybe an oversight, but certainly not sim orientated
Absolutely false.. The engine sounds are slightly muted, but it actually allows other things to be highlighted. At the amateur level, I've known many race drivers not use ear protection because it does allow them to hear other noises their car makes which is normally drown out by the engine. Those scare them so they'd rather not hear them and just wait for the car to break. ;)
Have you actually been in a real race car with helmet, balaclava and either ear protection and/or communication device? I have an you are not correct with your assumption above.. I'm not asking to poke at you, I'm asking based on your comment to see if you are really guessing or speaking from experience..
If you are wondering why ear protection would allow some noises to come through but not all of the engine noises, it has to do with the frequencies.
:D
Good quality ear protection maintains a very neutral response. Cheap stuff just bungs your ears up with foam.
