2h axes are, at the moment, the best choice for veteran players. I'm used at sword and shield, but my best scores and K/D ratio were achieved with 2h axes. (Not with an abysmal difference but better than sword + shield)
Axes are incredibly powerful in the appropiate hands, and of course there is a lot of skill behind, but also a few bugs and glitches. I'm not saying that you can't achieve really good scores with sword and shield, but you have a lot of handicaps.
In my opinion, master and exploit the 2h axes is right now easier than doing it with a shield. If you don't believe me just try to fight with a shield against skilled/veteran players, it's really hard.
About the archers, it's all said but they are only annoying when there are a lot of them. As simple as a lot of archers + infinite arrows = alt + f4. And it's sad, because I practice archery in the real life. XD
