Steam vs Battle.net
Is there any major difference between the Steam and Battle.net versions of D4? I’ll primarily be playing on desktop but will occasionally want to play on Deck.

My understanding is that the Steam version is Deck verified out of the box but I’d rather forego that feature if you miss out on content/ performance.

Any help greatly received

Nah there's no real difference other than blizzard/b.net is the native client and steam requires a blizzard account to connect to.

but you no longer require bnet to run.

No in game itself. But launcher, netcode, shop integration, patching method is MUCH better on Battlenet. I repeat myself: rule number one - you always buy directly from the publisher, not through an intermediary, as in this case, namely Steam.

The Steam version has the advantage of no Battle. net launcher, but you lose the option to not install higher resolution textures, so the install is always going to be bigger.

Once you're in the game there's no difference. If you're going to play on Deck then it's much easier to install and play from Steam compared to the process required to get the bnet version working.

Question:

I own the Game on B.net already.

Now, If i buy Vessel of Hatred inkl. D4 basegame on steam, is my version in b.net upgraded to Vessel of Hatred aswell?

Background:

As stated by "Flat Earth Defender", I also own a steamdeck and want to play on deck from time to time.

I tried the Lutris installation via b.net and think this is way to much hazzle, which is why iI am open to by the complete game (d4 + VoH) once more via steam, IF my bnet version is upgraded in the process.

Answers here are much appreciated!!

NO. For obvious reasons but to spell it out. Different platforms with different licenses. If you want the games version to be upgraded you need to buy the full base + expansion version on steam. Essentially you need to double dip.

so basically, cosmetics are purchased once and work on all different platforms no matter what, butt the game, even thought u need a bnet account to be linked to steam, needs to be purchased on every platform including all addons?

Did I understand that correct?

This is just completely incorrect. I own the game on both, and I haven't touched the Bnet version since picking it up on Steam.

Well I would say that if you are native English speaker and you own Steam Deck, you probably would be better getting the game from Steam, because a) Steam version doesn't allow you to mix audio and subtitles languages, but if you only gonna play in English, that bug won't affect you, and b) Launching Battle net version on Steam Deck is too hard, so if actually planning to use Steam Deck for Diablo 4, then you better to get the game on Steam, otherwise it's better to get the game on Battle net, because of what p0k314NET said - "rule number one - you always buy directly from the publisher, not through an intermediary, as in this case, namely Steam"

Exactly, I own Ultimate edition on Bnet and Standard on Steam, I have all cosmetics from Ultimate edition when I play via Steam

Yes, that's how it works and for this, among other reasons, they should give the version of Diablo 4 free to those who have it on Battlenet

I bought it on Battlenet and I'm not going to buy the expansion on Battlenet, but neither will the base game on Steam, so for my part they will lose a player, am I worried? well no, I have seen poe 2, and although I don't like poe 1 very much, poe 2 looks very good

I played all the Diablos, but 4 will be the last one for me

That's a strange hill to die on, but to each their own lol

You are gonna buy the expansion, sooner or later. Stop with the bs already.

For Steam Deck Gamers: I‘ve used a tool called „Non Steam Launchers“ to get Battle.net working and installed D4 based on this.

Link:
https://github.com/moraroy/NonSteamLaunchers-On-Steam-Deck/releases

What does it?
„No Steam Launchers“ is basically just a little script which is installing any wanted (you choose from list) game launcher like Battle.net, Epic, GoG etc. which will be installed directly to your Steam Deck for you. No need to hassle. You can choose if you want it to be internal or on your SD card and even install other things like streaming services(Netflix, Disney+ etc.) or Cloud/remote gaming services like Xbox Cloud worth one touch.

- Easy to install
- works like a charm
- no need for any additional emulation or tool layer running like Lutris does
