Steam is terrible at patching. Another game I have World of Warships is the same way. With their own launcher patches are done in a fraction of the time on Steam. If anything in a file has changed, Steam will redo the whole file even if it's huge instead of taking 1 second to patch a tiny bit.
I really hate it, but nothing to be done. It feels almost punitive for having it from Steam.
Sometimes it is faster to uninstall it and re-download. No way to really tell ahead of time though.
But as I said above, mine was downloading to an HDD. If you can, you could disable that from your Steam library. I'm betting Steam defaults to the drive with the most free space. If it was downloading to a good SSD I would think it'd take less than 5 min. Mine was 15 min or so overall, but it's fast for an HDD. A mostly empty 14 TB drive.
Actually it's on my SSD. It'd probably be much much worse. Still it seems to actually only taking 45min this time and not lying about too badly (it said 35 min). So... eh.
My computer is a dinosaur, a beast of a dinosaur, but still older. Just enough to play at a high setting for a pre-4k monitor, but yeah... from what I've heard though even some of the newer systems still have a bit of a wait if they are updating on steam since it wants to patch the -entire- set of game files every time.
They never post anything here, they dont care about steam
