The story
I wish there was a way to reset the whole story just like in D3. It may still be coming eventually, but I don't hold my breath. Every time when I do a part of the story, I feel sad when it's done.
Come on Diablo Devs! I know you have it in you, do it for a fan!

What do you mean? You want to replay the story?
Just make a new character and don't tick "skip campaign".

Yes, but in Diablo 3 you can do the campaign as many times as you like without having to make a new character.

This option exists behind an intelligence check. I'm guessing you failed?

When you choose new character's name there is a button "Change campaign state" (top-left) and the first option is to choose the beginning of campaign as the starting point :lunar2019piginablanket:

What I really miss is the character re-birth functionality from D3. Deleting my "old" characters isn't terribly fun, to put it mildly :lunar2019madpig:

My character is level 35. Now I want to start the story at level 35 and a higher difficulty. Not just switch to a higher difficulty and just get rekt. I want to build it up, And I think I missed something in the story of my necromancer. I am in act 2 and never got the quest for the mercenaries. Maybe a necro doesn't get mercenaries? Anyway, I want my necro to start the story over again at level 35 in a higher difficulty also. I googled it and they say it can't be done.

Mercenaries are part of the VoH expansion and tied to that story campaign.

That is why my Spiritborn got it. It is not fair to a barbarian who never gets a mercenary, or the rogue and sorc who can really benefit from a tank mercenary.

But any character can get a merc if you got the VoH expansion? After the base-game campaign, there is the VoH campaign. Only when creating a Spiritborn, iirc it defaults to him skipping the base campaign and directly starting the VoH campaign.

As I am taking a break currently, and only played one char (Spiritborn) this season, I don't even know how it is with new characters, can you skip just the original campaign but keep the VoH campaign? Or is it just "either doing both campaigns or skipping both"? Although I guess you can't skip the VoH campaign yet, maybe with next season.

Well, in that case I may have to kill Lilith first. We'll see.
I still hope that one day they give you an option to start the story over and over again with the same higher level character without having to start a new character.
Here I am now trying to knock these things out before reset. Hitting esc every time.

You must be a Poe2 player. They hit esc all the time before they themselves get knocked out. Cheating all the HC players.
