Lots of symbols, no way to tell what they mean.

The game puts a lot of icons over the heads of mobs but then does nothing to teach you what those symbols mean.
So what do they mean?

Do you know about symbols that appear over the heads of the mobs that aren't the affixes?
There's one with a black skull on a red background, the broken gold chain links, I think there's a gold one with a skull and a spiky crown?
I assume they're status effects but really no idea.

i would say they are status effects like vulnerable https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/vulnerable-status-effect/ but it's pretty cryptic for me as well.

there are some skulls but i guess they are just list of the buffs that appears above the exp bar, the ones above the monsters are definitely status effects (debuffs?) depending on class probably.

maybe you can provide screenshot so we can look it up in google
