How terrible is to play without paying?

I'm talking about the season pass and the cosmetic stuff. How cool are the gear you can get by just playing the game? Do you need to pay for transmog and dyes?
Can you make you character look cool/nice and not spending a dime with the cash shop?

gear is same, only skins and mount skins are in the shop, entirely cosmetic

there are plenty good looking sets in the game, don't need to spend money

The best are in the shop and quite expensive but there are a lot of mediocre stuff you unlock by just playing.

Overall for a paid game though it somehow it still feels worse than POE2 which is a f2p.

I've always managed to piece together some armor I like from drops.

You can get nice looking gear for free. And chnging colors on gear is free.

actualy i use for my sorcer dress what was for free in season pass those buy set,s are too much fancy in my opinion

If you don't care about cosmetics, then there's no need to pay for the season pass.

Note that you can still get exp boosts and a bunch of other stuff from seasonal content *without* the season pass. You just miss out on the cosmetics that way.

Diablo IV isn't a pay-to-win game like Path of Exile. The cash shop sells exclusively cosmetic items.

I've only played it a week on Xbox, there seems to be a lot of cosmetics locked behind microtransactions, but nothing story critical. The enemies do scale to your level from what I can tell, you you'll never fell to overpowered, but the ultimatum skills will quickly clear most small enemies away.
