No, seasonal characters are transfered to Eternal Realms which is a graveyard for old characters. You can continue playing your character there.
That's why you should ALWAYS make the NEW characters on seasonal realm. They go back to Eternal eventually anyway.
So if you want to engage in Season 6 (Season of Hatred), fight Realmwalkers and check out the portals to Hell they will drop (this is a summary we found during Public Test Realm of patch 2.0) - then you will need to make a new seasonal character after season 6 goes live on October 8th.
You only delete characters if you don't want them or want to make room for a new character.
Seasonal (season characters/stash) and Eternal realm (non season characters/stash).
In diablo 3 you have the choice of converting your non season character into a seasonal character, so you don't have to waste time in character creation, also stack the hours played on that character. (you don't get loot to go with, only the weekly challenge has the option to be redeemed in non season or season, once per week)
You'll get the same gameplay as seasonal sans battle passes which can be completed by a throw-away character in a week.
I disagree on so many levels with what you said.
Seasonal content adds nice lore tidbits, because there's always a questline. And on top of that you get at least SOME mechanics on the seasonal realm that do not exist on Eternal.
I liked leveling in Hell Breaches in Season 5 for example. Not on Eternal - AT ALL.
There are also bonuses from the *FREE* battle pass track - Smoldering Ashes - and they improve gameplay quite significantly.
