And so the question is, why does it matter what happens to your current character after this season ends? it doesn't, truthfully.
It's a video game and you should play it for fun. If you don't find it fun this deep into the season, put it away for a while and maybe come back next season. That's what I do.
I play exclusively Eternal Realm because I find it removes a lot of the FOMO and MTX aspects I find frustrating about modern games. I'd rather have all my legendaries and materials carry over. There's no chance I would ever play enough in a single Season to hit Lv100 on a Seasonal character, so why not just stick with Eternal?
It isn't so much that I love ARPG's; I spend a lot more time playing strategy games such as Age of Wonders, Total War, and Civilization. It's just that I don't feel in any way bored of ARPG's, but rather want to take a deliberate break so I don't burn out on D4 specifically. I've tried PoE1 multiple times, but find the lack of respec frustrating; it's so easy to brick a character, and changing builds generally requires starting from scratch.
It takes like 15-20 hours. Are you saying you play less than 15 hours in three months?
But forget that; patch 2.0 is coming on October 8th alongside the free Season 6 and the paid Vessel of Hatred expansion.
Guess what: no more level 100. The endgame begins at level 60 which is the new max (up from 50, because they are also detaching paragon points completely from leveling).
So now you only need 60 to be 'max level', and after that you get up to 300 Paragon Points just doing whatever you feel like because there's also a new Difficulty system overhaul.
I highly recommend you give Seasonal Realm a shot after October 8th.
There's honestly no real "FOMO", it's all just cosmetic stuff like Battle Pass which you can completely ignore if you want. Hell, you even get some very minimal amount of free cosmetic stuff just playing on Seasonal Realm.
Because Eternal is objectively the poorer version of the game. Some of the seasonal storylines were quite fun to experience, in my opinion. And overall you just level up faster, you have a few more mechanics to enjoy...
I do love Grim Dawn, but I'm waiting for the Fangs of Asterkarn expansion before I jump back it; I've pretty much played it out for now.
Yet I do also advice OP to play seasonal realm, and you don't even need to level up to Lv.100 to complete seasonal quest, I just finished it in a few days with my Lv.55 druid!
Laughing because I also just finished seasonal with my level 60-61 were bear druid. Infernal horde is hella solo, when I jumped from t3 to t4. I had no problem going through them in t3 on tier 1. Lol now its different . 500 points of willpower is not enough
I like leveling and kitting out various builds and the different sorts of play experience that provides. So, I've leveled up a number of different builds to "end-game" this Season and am working on another.... and "should" be leveling one more, just "because."
But, I'll probably take a break soon. Why? It gets pretty repetitive and monotonous right now to level up so many characters. The only reason I'm doing it now is to get a Necro's Ultimate Cooldown temper for a Sorc I have and then to level a Barb to use a Grandfather if I can get one to drop or Spark it. And,by that time, it'd probably be close to release if I actually then played those characters a bit to "end-game" status.
So, yeah, if you've been playing quite a bit and don't see a healthy break between the time you put it down for awhile and October 8'th, take a break. :) That way, when you return in just a few weeks, you'll get a bit more of that "new experience" feel.
Keep in mind, too - Season 6 is introducing radical changes across the board, so that alone is going to make things "new'ish." Doubling-down on that and taking a break may make you a bit more enthusiastic for those changes, too.
PS: I picked up "Core Keeper," a very different sort of game, for the interim. I'll amuse myself with exploring it if/when I get the itch to play something until then.
Yay, someone who views gaming the same way I do! Yes, I agree with everything you said; I'm still having fun, but I acknowledge that any further play would just be more of the same, and that if I take a break and play a different ARPG, D4 will feel fresher when I come back to it.
