They're really not put forward like that. They're more like Spirit Beings that exist because of belief.
In Diablo 2, there many forms of Ape/Monkey in Kurast and surrounds, which had a distinctive Mayan feel to it. So... "lore-wise" it's not out-of-bounds, either.
The new class, Spiritborn, seems to be very similar in gameplay to the Diablo 3 Monk class.
They're... Kung-Foo Mayan Druid Monks. I guess.

The thing is, it does things with "Spirits" that the current Diablo 4 Druid should have done, but doesn't... I guess they wanted a deeper dive into animism or something with their "jungle" theme.
Some of the functions of some of the abilities seem very "D3 Witchdoctor" like.
PS: I guess you don't work there if you don't wear a t-shirt with those bicep-enhancing tighter arms, huh? I'm sure most of the employees have their parent's permission.
PPS: To sum - It's very much like the Diablo 3 Monk in its play, at least in how certain Monk skills/builds were played. Though, the Monk's defensive/buff-bot role didn't appear. We'll have to see if it can be played like that.
You already know the answer, yes it's a woke checkbox. They have a tool used at Blizzard that chooses Race, Gender, Sexual orientation of all new characters/classes etc and the themes surrounding them. Then makes choices based on thier twisted view of 'victims.'
No way Blizz was going to release a White/Christian themed character like Paladin. And when they do it won't be anywhere near European themed.
They used any and all jungle themes with made up martial arts.
Doesn't matter what you want or believe.
They obviously wanted "new."
But, to get that, they thought copying a previous design and gameplay would do the trick, just if they sprinkled something different on top of it.
"Let's just paint it like a witchdoctor jungle drood. It'll be cheaper than buying skins from Apex Legends, lol."
"U R JEENEEYOOS!"
PS: I'll reserve judgement until I play it. But, the melee gameplay looks very much like a D3 Monk's. I liked D3's Monk, just not the button-spam-weaving needed to really make use of them.
You are the one race baiting.
