If you don't have the steam base game.
Cheapest option to get everything, buy the standard bundle base+expansion and then the standard expansion to ultimate upgrade.
If you have the base game (you don't at the moment), then just get the ultimate edition expansion.
Everything else is more expensive route towards the ultimate version.
Also mind that, you have to use a battle net account to play the game, no need for launcher, and you could get your ultimate base game content back if you used your battle net account with the ultimate stuff to link with steam after starting up the game in steam.
And get your son a different own account with their own game.
Or live with your choices.
I had the ultimate edition on battle net, and then got the standard edition on steam, then got the ultimate edition expansion, so I have all. Doesn't matter where you buy the in game content, it's shared with the linked battle net account.
I even bought my brother the standard+expansion bundle on steam and a standard version of d4 for my friend when it came to steam, friend had already bought it themselves on battle net.
Hopefully they use all that and invest in making the game worth playing more than a day, instead of buying yachts or whatever they've been doing for the last 20 years.

Dunno why you talk like everybody only cares about the platinum.
He only talked about getting both ultimate editions, which have exclusive deals for cosmetics.
Battle pass and credits you can get without deluxe/ultimate edition, so credits and battle pass are redundant topics.
If you want to buy credits, go buy credits, nobody said buy deluxe/ultimate for credits, your topic assumes someone did.
You claim the game isn't worth playing more than a day, yet you have 40 hours in the last two weeks and 200+ since the game came out
You're contradicting yourself with your own behavior here
Is that why this is the only game you've played in a week?
