I've never played a Diablo game before. Should I buy it?

I was considering giving it a shot and buying it, as someone who has never played Diablo before.

Hell I wasn't even a Blizzard guy before they made Overwatch, and seeing what they did to Overwatch 2 and hearing how some fans felt... makes me skeptical

D4 is a good game buried in terrible choices. I have over 500 hours on PS5 and still enjoy the combat and the clan I belong too, but that's it. People started on the Eternal realm and some want to stay on it, so nerfing it to make season 1 seem better was a cheap move.
Total in- balance between classes is insane, letting level 90-100 into Tier 2 & 3 PVP is not balanced.
Taking tier 5 out of the game and basically making level 80 end game gear, yes I know you can get higher and better gear score pieces but it's so mini - maxi for barely nothing it takes the fun out completely.
Drop rates that are so low you just vend most of your gear anyways.
Too many aspects and to many with useless stats.
Helltides, Legions and Nightmare dungeons are end-game period, and the dungeons don't change, at least at work I get paid.
Mounts that take forever to remount, hitting every rock or log possible.
Cosmetics that are ugly and cost an arm and a leg.
They say season 2 will be better, well it better be cause Steam isn't full of suckers, well maybe a couple.
Stop punishing us for playing your game, make it fun, let me put the time in to make myself feel like a legend not every ten levels I am OP then I suck, BALANCE your game.
Stop with the cheap one shot kills in Nightmare dungeons, why can I only carry one stone, because you want people to spend as much time as possible so maybe they buy your expensive cosmetics that you can barely see anyways.
If you stopped punishing us and made it so it was fun to level with good gears dropping way more often, then guess what people would play longer, try different classes.
Make cosmetics a reasonable price and maybe I would feel guilty about playing your game so much I would want to buy cosmetics just because.

You can buy Diablo 3 + Reaper of Souls xpac dirt cheap when its on sale on battlenet

Try that out, learn the game and have fun

Then if you like it heaps, buy D4 on sale

no matter what people tell you, it's easily worth the money if you've never played it. for 70 bucks you get at least 100 hours out of it if ARPGs are to your liking. That's already better than most AAA games

most people criticise the game for it's lackluster content past level 70-ish, for which in season 2 you'll at least get new end game bosses that weren't in the game before. probably still won't be enough especially compared to the likes of Path of Exile, but again, it's easily worth it for a first time playthough

Have you played a hack n slash ARPG before? If not then there's a few free 2 play ones here on Steam that will give you some idea if you might like D4.

If you wanna know the story, then Diablo 2 is good place to get the overarching story. Diablo 3 expands on the lore and is the better game imo. Plus you can get both for like $20 each and are worth playing. Diablo 4 for $70 is not worth it imo.

A friend of a friend played Diablo 3 and when asked what the story was about and he answered "I don't know" and after the same guy went to re-watch the story on YT he answered "I still don't know".

That was enough to persuade me not to go into Diablo 3 and given how I was upset with story and characters of StarCraft 2 and what mess Diablo Immortal turned out to be I am not even going to try Diablo 4.

I mean, all the diablo games boil down to the same thing: demons bad, kill demons, be the hero who kills the big bad demon. The story is good in 3 but Diablo 2 has a more concise story for sure. I just prefer the gameplay in 3 over 2. Idk ♥♥♥♥ about Immortal. I've never played it nor do I plan to either.

lol Starcraft 2s story is one of my favs actually, so I can't agree with you on that. LotV is prob my second fav expansion of all time

As others said, try Diablo 2 and 3, I really enjoy 3, can't say the same about 4 for now.

Also as others mentioned, try some cheaper Diablo-like games to see if this game genre type is for you. Path of Exile and Undecember are free to play, Last Epoch, Wolcen and Grim Dawn are fairly priced and good quality games.
