Still worth to play if you like games in this genre.
Even the prominent content creators know there is no point in beating a dead horse. For example asmongold came back to check out the season 4, he left in less than a day. He believed there was no point in making videos about it because the game is still boring and he already made 10 videos discussing why last year.
Have there been improvements? Yes. Have there been meaningful improvements? No.
The only reason you can convince yourself that it is fun now is because of stockholm syndrome. This game is filled with people feeling bad about being ripped off and they are collectively committing to an echo chamber of like-minded people. Anyone willing to be honest left a year ago and knows how hopeless it is to talk someone out of stockholm syndrome.
D4's release and just about everything up to Season 4 was "bad." A lot of what you may be seeing are players who were so disenfranchised that they just quit playing, but are still upset. :) (I was one of those, but gave Season 4 and it's changes a chance and I am now glad I did.)
S4 made radical changes across the board and now the game is "not bad." It's actually decent to good through leveling up to the 80's or so, maybe further if you're enjoying your class's build, and just past leveling up Glyphs to 21. After that, it's a bit grindy in hunting for gear upgrades and hitting the "Masterworking" cycle, where you farm the Pit... if you have gear worth Masterworking. :)
BUT...
Diablo has always been a franchise that is about "class builds." Once the player is past world difficult stages and hitting deep into leveling mechanics and gear hunting, the routine, normal, choice for a player that may find they're not having as much fun, anymore, is to... roll a new class and a different sort of class build...
That is, in a nutshell, not just the Diablo play loop, but what many ARPG games have worked into their gameplay.
So, when you're not as satisfied and you're not getting those big progression advancement feedback hits, you start considering playing a different character with new mechanics. You start again, leveling up a new character, experience new mechanics, encounters you have to deal with differently, new gear, new meaningful uniques, new abilities that mean your actual playstyle is different, etc..
IMO, a lot of the people who think it is still as bad as it was may not enjoy the idea of re-rolling and playing a new character in order to obtain new ways to get the progression and gameplay feedback they want.
Note: D4 still has some issues in its gameplay loop. Notably, the end-game gearing process, a lack of varied end-game activities to engage with, some issues with crafting and, certainly, the end-game "economy," etc. But, there are some gameplay content additions coming with Season 5 and we have yet to see what, exactly, the new expansion will bring with its new class/region.
It's "better," now. Next Season will come with content additions, which have to be included in any discussion that involves where the gameplay may go...
40?
Well, your NIC is appropriate... You think that leveling to 40 exposes you to the gameplay so you can make an informed decision?
There's a heck of a lot of progression to do past level 100. It IS focused on perfecting gear and Masterworking it so one can push "The Pit" content, though.
But, you didn't even get to the point where you could see that on the horizon of your gameplay.
You don't have to like the game. Any gamer should be just fine with you not enjoying the gameplay. That's cool. We all have our preferences. But, to pass such critical judgement based on such a tiny, limited, gameplay experience without even coming close to seeing "the game" is just disingenuous.
Again - You don't have to like the game. But, if you're going to declare your opinion to be worthy of consideration, you need to make an informed one.
I could waste a few more hours insta-wiping the screen with all my legendaries at 40 like vampire survivors to get to 100, but I seriously think you are full of it when saying the game is suddenly good now at 100. It was horrible last season, and now leveling is even worse than before.
It’s not a bad game, it’s just fairly average. They played it very safe, and in doing so lost new creative elements that could have been added. Understandably its a risk, but you gotta innovate to keep things fresh.
