Yes. I switched over from the Blizzard Client and picked up where I left off.

According to Eurogamer's article, not for the trial (However, the free trial is exclusive to Battle.net, so progress won't be carried over if you buy Diablo 4 on Steam)
but as Nim.bat says below it seems they are the only ones to say that

But i guess the level cap for the trial (lvl 20) should not be a problem to lose the progression and start over on Steam if in this case they don't cross platforms

I don't think there is any official info on that.

No other article mentions any cross-progression limitations for the trial, only Eurogamer, which seems to assume so just because it's a "Battle.net exclusive trial".

Ask Blizzard support about this to be sure before you buy anything.

Has anyone purchased it after playing the free trial yet, and can confirm?

Yes, as long as you use your Blizzard account on both versions, the progress will transfer across.

Yes, I played the trial on Bnet and bought it on Steam. My character was still there.
