Technically, you'll get the same number of covers from shards no matter what but with multiple heroes selected (or none) it spreads them out so you end up waiting longer to get the bonus covers.
I bought a pack with 1 dr. Strange 5* and 5 jean grey 4*s, so i assume it makes sense to pick those for 4 and 5 *
I also got about 6 spiderman 3* and 6 kamala khan 3*, should i go for them or start up something new? I heard good things about 3*thanos, which ive already earned 300 shards for once
5* dr. strange isn't quite as nice as the 3* version because his yellow passive doesn't have the team heal portion. 5* would still get the job done but you could probably max champ 3* dr. strange before even getting 5* 1/2 way to champion.
3* thanos can help speed some trash enemy fight heavy events up when used together with dr. strange because you can roughly balance the damage dr. strange's passive does to ensure when the first enemy dies thanos's black passive kills the others. Then in the next fight, dr. strange's passive should heal your team up from the damage thanos' ability did to you when it fired.
3* thanos is much less useful against enemy "named" teams that match though because it can be hard making sure your team is kept healed up with both the damage from thanos's on kill passive and the enemy team's match + ability damage. Without dr. strange returning health to your team before thanos's on kill passive fires, you'll just grind your own team to death too fast.
Just make sure to balance Dr. strange's level with thanos's level so that it takes no more than 3-4 of dr. strange's passive going off to heal all of the damage thanos's black passive deals to your team when it finishes the fight. Or just skip thanos altogether as a team member and concentrate on 3*s that synergize well in 4* and higher for transitioning to higher rarity teams.
For 4*, I highly recommend polaris. one of the most effective teams right now is centered on her passives that focus on matching strike / attack / shield tiles. Once you have polaris to champion, start working on 4* rocket and groot because his yellow passive allows you to start every fight with up to 7 strike tiles already on the board.
You can see the possibilities with having a ready supply of tiles right away to spread and deal damage with polaris's passive. Until you get rocket and groot set you can still use polaris with other support tile producers like 2* or 3* daken or wolverine.
After you get rocket and groot's yellow up to level 5 you can either continue him to champion or start working on 4* nico minoru. Her passive that increases the strength of all friendly support tiles if you have more on the board than the enemy can really intensify a polaris team.
For 5* I'd recommend Kitty Pride. She has a ton of benefit for most fights with her passive that eliminates enemy special tiles (including cooldown tiles at lvl 5) plus she can replace nico very well in a polaris team with her similar passive that increases friendly support tile strength.
By the time you have a good polaris team running, you will most likely have a good idea which heroes to concentrate on after that. You might even just use your favorites to fill in missing covers as you can because shards don't rot and are much easier to direct than random draw cover rewards. You can just hold onto tokens until you have space to roster any new heroes you get.
I think ill go for IM40 before strange, but after that Ill go for strange
Thanos has been boosted in recent events so you aren't seeing him at his normal power limits. Khan 3* and Spider-Man 3* are both good. I personally would favor Khan. She both heals your team every time they use a power and has a power to hurt the entire enemy team. Some times powers that hurt the entire enemy team do damage even when the enemy is invisible or in the air. If there are 4 enemies or waves then she will only hurt enemies on your screen. -- Spider-Man 3* is great because he stuns and it's for a low cost (5 blue).
Depending on what your Strange 5* power is it might be better to use that slot for the chars you have 4-6 covers for. Just try to compare his power to what their powers will look like. That is if slots are an issue for you.
If you haven't been already, you will want to try to do Deadpool Dailies every day. For those you are required 1* and 2*. Juggernaut is the favorite 1*. You only need one 1* most of the time and it's for Deadpool Dailies. Daken and Wolverine are good 2* because they heal faster than other characters (both between games and during games, they also revive quickly on their own between games). They also create synergy for each other when on the same team. You can get plenty of 1* and 2* from the Dark Reign campaigns. When you are comfortable with your 3*-5* and need the space you can limit yourself to one 1* and 2-3 2*s. People obsess over having every 3* just for the Deadpool Dailies. Don't worry about that if you are just starting out.
Someones thatll work better with different synergies?
Or is ot wiser to aim for one specific strategy?
Some other decent but more general ones are Karnak and Juggernaunt. Both get match damage increases that make their simple matching do significant damage, Karnak gets crit tile production abilities and Juggernaunt has a passive that damages the entire enemy team when he specifically matches tiles.
I'm sure there are many other "standalone" type 4*s -- Juggs and Karnak were just the first 2 that came to mind.
I'd still recommend a Polaris setup because it's not really specific to that exact setup. While you're building up to the full "best" group you can use any characters that produce support tiles easily instead of rocket and groot -- he's just one of the "best" to do it. You can even skip the nico / kitty "tile buffer" slot for 2 tile producers.
The Deadpool 3* reward are points towards his 14 cost Purple/Pink special ability. This special ability will down every enemy visible regardless of if they are invisible or in a special game mode where they are invincible. I find 3* Deadpool extremely valuable because of this. If you don't use the special then his normal 14 Purple/Pink does damage to all visible enemies ( like Khan's 12 Green ability). Deadpool 5* gives a try at one of the Deadpool Vaults.
The next thing you might want to know is there are characters that are limited to events. Some examples of this are Spider Ham (probably getting his name wrong), Devil Dinosaur, and Howard the Duck. I find Howard the Duck also extremely helpful. Most abilities/powers cannot harm him when he is invisible. I use Deadpool 3* and Howard the Duck (4*) to take down enemies in events too difficult or time consuming to fight. Both of them it's their pink/purple ability though so I try not to have them on the same team. You can get Howard the Duck during the Webbed Wonder event. I think that happens every couple of months.
It's hard to give complete advice because I have my own play style and you may use a different play style. Like I could suggest Medusa 4* with Polaris 4* and Rocket & Groot 4* because that would work for my play style. Two of Medusa's abilities are passive. One passive ability makes a timer if it doesn't exist that turn and if it is matched it makes special tiles. The other passive ability gives colors if an enemy special tile is matched or heals her + her team if a friendly special tile is matched. Her pink/purple ability cost 10, it mixes around random tiles, if those tiles are enemy special tiles then she changes them to friendly and improves them. I like playing support and working with support in games so this is where I'd lean. But that's my play style. You may prefer to play a different way. Like maybe you'd rather use Marvel with the black and yellow combo... With her Black Power she makes a count down tile and if it expires it does a ton of damage.. but her Yellow Power makes a Friendly Timer expire and the power go off. Then there are characters with low cost powers that tear you down and other characters have high cost powers that are strong and take out one enemy quickly.
Strange 3* is a great combo of Support Abilities. He heals the team a little when the enemy fires a power, he hurts the enemy a little to punish them when they use powers, he can stun someone for a long time, and he can steal from the enemy team. Lotsa support abilities.
You might want a team that is a mix of support and damage or all support or mostly support or you might not care at all about support and prefer attack or defense. We're mostly going to tell you things from out play style. People are quite used to seeing Polaris 4* + Rocket & Groot 4* + Medusa 4* as Top Ten in Versus. Or similar combos. I find Hela 5* + Rocket & Groot 4* to be very helpful in Waves. Hela 5*'s green keep hitting enemies if enemies are downed, her Black ability makes all Blue Tiles turn special, her Red turns three tiles to special but it first convert's enemy tiles to friendly tiles to fill those three. She has a passive ability inside one of her other abilities that improves all friendly special tiles upon the death of an enemy. So the special tiles build up in power through waves. If you are interested in Thanos then Hela might be a good companion since he does damage to an enemy or the whole enemy team whenever an enemy dies.
