Here we go again... It was nice 2,5 years, but instead grind lowering developers made it even more devilish. Thanks but no. I'm out.
Meh... I already unfavorited all but 1 character from each tier. Otherwise it'll take forever sharing the shards across multiple characters.
However, in the latest info link, they stated they'll be adding shard rewards to story events, shield level rewards and champion rewards as well as possibly more areas.
The hope is that with the still to be released sources, the shard system will be both faster and more reliable than the bonus cover system was.
The bonus hero system was roughly 1 in 20 draws randomly to get a random cover and as is, the shard system is roughly 1 in 23 draws guaranteed to get a chosen cover.
With more sources of shards, it should reach or even exceed the 1 in 20 threshold and be much more reliable than the pure randomness that was under the bonus hero system.
What is really rare - 5* heroes. I spent near 30 legendary tokens and got only one 5* cover. This is ridiculous!
Effectively, you saw so many 3* bonus heroes just because 3*s were more common than 4* and 5*. With the shard system, it will be similar because you will get more 3* shards than the others and it takes fewer shards to reach the bonus 3* cover.
If you turned in 30 leg tokens and only got 1 5* cover that was very bad luck. It should be 1 in 7 on average I think. If you meant you got 1 5* bonus cover in 30 leg tokens, that was very good luck because you should have only seen 1 5* bonus cover in roughly 120 leg tokens before.
The upside to the shard system is that you make guaranteed progress towards that bonus cover from all of your regular token draws. Theoretically, you could get a bonus 5* cover even if you were the unluckiest person in the world and didn't get a single 5* from leg token turn ins for that entire time.
As I mentioned above, as it stands, looking purely at token turn ins, the rate at getting bonus covers is lower with the shard system than it was with the bonus hero system, but they are adding more sources to get shards than just token turn ins that should improve that rate.
I just hope they make the extra sources of shards give generic shards and not hero specific ones. Wouldn't be much use to have event "rewards" be 10 shards for a 3* hero you have no desire to build the other 290 shards for.
As far as BH, I'd always had good luck -- in the 2 weeks prior to shards being introduced I got 3 bonus 5*s (this is not the norm, but it was nice). I pulled a 3* from a standard token today, which in the past gave an automatic bonus hero... the 6 shards is a bit of a letdown... it would take 50 3* pulls from standard covers to earn 1 3* cover now, so that's 49 BHs that we miss out on (over time, of course).
