The genre-creating legendary game, made more approachable for modern gamers, while keeping the original code intact.

To every fan of the innumerable games inspired by Rogue, this is the progenitor of your passion, and the de facto definition of must-own.

If you're as old enough as I am to have played the original Rogue way back when this is the same game only in first person. Every letter of the alphabet is a monster and they are all in this game. Leprechauns, Centaurs, Vampires and the annoying Aquators are all here. There is plenty of loot to find but without an Identify Scroll you may be out of luck. The purpose of the game is to get the Amulet of Yendor on the final level and then backtrack all the way back to the first floor.

This game is definitely a nostalgia piece and it is done very well indeed. It's the grandaddy of the entire RogueLike genre and it is still every bit as challenging today as it was back then.

This game is exactly what it says it is: The original ROGUE in first person.
The videos make it look real time but it's still cleverly turn-based: Enemies move when you move and attack in turns when you attack.
Other than the perspective change and quasi-real time feel it's still Rogue.
It feels a bit bare-bones going back to the OG of Rogue-likes now compared to some of the later games in the genre, but it's also refreshing to do it like this in its own way.
The ability to switch between tileset and ASCII graphics is a real nice touch, and the music, simple though it is, really adds that extra something. It sounds like something from Ye Olden Days undercoating this fresh coat of paint.
If you're a fan of the original, or a new Rogue-like fan looking to explore the genre's roots, I'd say give it a go.

I'm not certain it's exactly the original rogue, but it sure feels like it. Keeping in mind that the original wasn't as complex as later stuff like Nethack of DCSS, it's still a fun roguelik-- A fun game of Rogue. The first person perspective does highlight how samey all the rooms get, and the darkness is much more annoying in first person, but hey, it's still Rogue and Rogue is still simple fun.

Smooth controls, good graphics, and a really enjoyable soundtrack. Along with a few improvements over the original Rogue, this is a fun, new way to enjoy the classic game. As of the time of this review, it's a complete experience but still actively being improved by the developer.

Definitely the best way to play Rogue in 2023, in my opinion. The hybrid artwork is simply gorgeous, and the game plays well as a conversion into semi-real time. Definitely worth the 5 bucks to anyone who wants to experience the granddaddy of roguelikes in a more modern way.

A lot of traditional roguelikes are hard to play. Almost deliberately so. The idea of fighting with DOS-Box, compiling from source code, or having to trudge through ASCII graphics present serious barriers to folks interested in the OG roots of the modern genre and its legacy.

Rogue-FP is great.

I personally have always wanted to boot up the original 1980 version of Rogue, but couldn't be compelled enough to do so. Food meters, weird keybinds, they're the kind of thing that keeps you from experimenting with the classics. RFP is great because of just a few simple tweaks. Graphical tileset is a major plus: now I don't have to worry if a "b" is a small bat, or a bear. The spacebar being the "do just about everything" button is a great, much needed simplification. Being able to save and resume is great.

Overall, I'm very happy with what Jurax has put out here. There's a million traditional forks of the OG Rogue out there, but only one which I recommend right off the bat for modern gamers to play: Rogue-FP.
