Yes. Buying any "weapon" which includes shields other that a sword type is suppose to stop progress towards the achievement on that run. So buying a dagger on that run would have prevented you from getting the achievement. In my video I buy only swords and don't get the achievement. I don't buy any shields. I don't buy any daggers. I only buy short swords, long swords, great swords, and the divine punisher. That last "sword" which still interacted with the great sword to get me more max health, was the only "iffy" item I can think of that broke my completion of the achievement.
