when you are using a Windows system there might be a mix up between different audio devices. I.g. there might be an onboard soundcard present that is set as the default device but the HDMI connection uses the audio device of the graphicscard. The game automaticly chooses the default device for playback.
You can check if there are several audio devices present and which one is used by the game by looking into the Windows Volume Control panel. From there you can check the device settings in the Sound Control panel properties.
Regarding the Xbox One controller on your Mac please check if it's recognized by the Steam client as an input device.
In the Big Picture overlay there is an option to enable remapping of xInput controllers through the Steam API. The game supports both cases, the direct xInput API and the control through the Steam API. Using this option you can test if it has an effect on your system.
Best regards
