I will not say for sure, but as I understand it, the decisive factor is the money that Aliena give to him at a meeting in a tavern. Perhaps help in the dispute also plays a role. It can also be influenced by dialogues with him. At least for me it worked. (And apologize for my English)

if Richard dies ... does Alena still marry Alfred? please reply .. I saved Richard on my first playthrough and Alena married Alfred to get money to support Richard's war

Aliena marries Alfred even if Richard dies, she uses the money to support Sir Catface.

You don't have to do all of that.
He's still alive at the end of Book 2 for me, and I chided him a lot, had Aliena take charge of him every chance she got and gave Phillip more money than Richard.

I did go with the bandit woman and stab the guy though.

Wow. That was a surprise for me, cause I didn’t know Richard may die. I trusted women in the wood and killed her man in a burned cottage later. But I gave didn’t give him more money than Philipp. And didn’t make him confident. In the end of Book 2 he still alive

I didn't trust the woman in the woods. I did stab the bandit in the burnt house. Richard still died. I think the deciding factor is that woman.

Interesting! I didn't realise that Richard could die at all.
I also trusted the woman, and then stabbed the bandit in the back. I also gave Phillip more money than Richard, and he is still alive and well and swanning about demanding money for horses, saddles, and drinks for his men.

holy cheetos he's dead in my game. Was not expecting this at all and I like that this kind of thing can happen in this game.

Who the hell is Sir Catface?! I dont see a point for her supporting someone else beside her brother..... I think I have to replay it. Richard seens to be really important. The whole second book is about get the titel back for Richard. I dont even like him....but still better than support some random guy.
