what alfred did really just echoes what tom said at the beginning of the game, builders need work and alfred just went where the work was, but they really should have fleshed it out more.
That's one of the disappointing things in the game, to be frank. If there were one decision point I wish they'd change in the game, it would be to have Aliena marry someone other than Alfred. The game gives you a lot of freedom in the beginning, but I guess because of size concerns, they really funnel you towards an ending.
