Honestly I would say this game is much better than the latest paradox game about Rome. It's micro intensive but I kind of like that.
Hi. Im a big total war fan and own a lot of them. This game is not like total war in any aspect. It is more about your dynasty. there is a lot to take in and it is a very good game. Where as total war are more troop focused strategy this game is more political focused. Trade take a bigger turn in EU too. without iron you cant have heavy troops etc. As i said before though, it focuses a lot on dynasty. u can do a lot, from imprison people to marry whoever u like, but once your dynasty dies its game over. keep your family alive. Defo worth a shot. also check out imperator rome. a newer version to EU
We all agree that Total War and Europa Universalis are two different games, in many ways.
But, even the vanilla version of EU: Rome gives you a much more in-depth view of the ancient world. And its soundtrack is truly a masterpiece.
Now, this game was probably just a test for the Paradox team, for future games (just like Sengoku). It means that the developers left this game with many (gamebreaking) bugs and an empty world, with only few factions. But Wiz, a very famous modder, completed what the devs started: his mod "Reign of the Ancients" makes this game 3 times better, adding a lot of tribes and making it in general much more realistic (and because of this, much more difficult).
There is no doubt for me: EU: Rome + Reign of the Ancients mod makes this game the most realistic ancient era game ever created till our days. Total War misses just too many things.
There are things in the game like religious prestige which have nearly no impact at all. Even building temples in all my 40 provinces only increased the omen chance by 0.02. And nowhere in the game is that explained at all.
You cant even see how many troops other factions have so there is no way to assess if you can attack someone.
The events are abysmal. Every 6 month the senate comes and tells me to change a commander, or change a governour or change one of the positions like preator. And its repeating all the time and you have to choose one or the other.
The movement of troops is the worst crap I have seen ever. Like all other Paradox games troops teleport from province to province with a cooldown time. But in this game they won't lock after a while and you can change your decision until the last day. The AI can do it too. So you move your troops to a province and the AI to another until you stop and then the AI stops too. This is so infuriatingly boring and dumb I cant stand it. No way of modding this crap out.
Many many other things are horrible too. You cant get a Casus Belli by diplomatic action. Instead you have to lure them to attack you which is really a bad game design decision. This is a game and not a puppet theater where I only want to watch and manipulate the AI to do what I want.
There are only a very few of the infuriating game design decisions. I think the worst is how research works. Even after 20 years of producing the most research points in the world other countries, outrank me in tech. Even if they never produced more tech points then me throughout the game.
The other main problem are all the diplomatic actions or character actions only a madmen would ever use because they are so unreliable and the chance of it working is way too low. All you can get there is a big pile of sorrow. If only 1 out of 10 assassinations work it means I threw away 450 gold and got 20 infamy for nothing.
So the only real thing the game provides is a bad map painter. You attack, get rid of the stab hit, conquer some provinces, build up your manpower again, rinse repeat. That is the whole game. All the micromanagement doesnt provide anything interesting. If loyality of someone drops you just dont give him a position anymore or send him for a month to foreign countries especially to a country you attack because then at least he gets killed there.
I dont have a problem with people having fun with this game but its certainly not better than vanilla Rome Total War. Especially battles are thousand times more fun in Rome Total War.
