its possible and easier with some types of pistols than others. Something like the glock with iots 2/3rd cut ejeciton port might require you to actually push the round into the chamber before letting the slide go as it might fall out. 1911's in this case with their near 1/4 cut ejection port you really only need to drop it into the port and let it run forward. In some cases, with some pistols, the chamber might be a little to... intricate to allow you to just drop a round in, but as CrunkCow said, it does wear on the extractor unnecessarily.
Edit- Also, I assume you MIGHT run the risk of detonation out of battery if something on the boltface stikes the primer a little too hard, but ive done it without problem.
EditEdit- the droppingthe round in and disengaging the slide stop to chamber the round would only work if you had the empty mag in, lest you want the roudn to fall out the magwell onto the floor. =D
Chamber a round, drop the mag, holster the gun, refill the mag, take your gun out and put it back it.
I do it whenever I find myself with more than one magazine worth of ammo in this game, it takes like 2 seconds.
On the topic of realism though
When you try top loading like that with these box magazine fed auto pistols they don't close completely and you could potentially damage your gun. It's like a $10 fix depending on the gun but why would you want to waste that money?
I'd waste it if it would save my life :))
I love how scarce ammo can be. I love that feeling of, "These four bullets have to last me through the next engagement".
In a real-life situation if you were a person who carries a weapon, you wouldn't just have a pocket full of loose ammo. You would have it in your magazine. Even people that prefer revolvers have speed loader clips if they feel like they would need more than 5 or 6 shots. You would have absolutely no reason to load it from the top and attempt to smash it shut and screw up the extractor.
So I'll repeat this,
Chamber a round, drop the mag, holster the gun, refill the mag, take your gun out and put it back it.
Two seconds, enjoy.
