GAME MAP SIZE USING REAL MATHS
Because the devs are yet to tell us just how large the wasteland is, I have taken it upon myself to once and for all find out the truth....

Looking back at the footage of the livestream, both at the cars driven and the in game map, I'm going to estimate that it would take a player 9 minutes at the most to drive the map north to south, if the player was going full speed with a car of average weight, and a v-6 engine. (assuming they did not run out of guzzoline, were attacked, etc.)

I decided to boot up Just Cause 2 and drive myself to the bottom of the map. I set a destination 25 km away that would take me through a variation or roads as close as I could find to match the roads of Mad Max, and got behind the wheel of a CHEPACHET PVD. (A fast, all-terrain, lightly armored military truck with a large motor and off road suspension)
I used this truck because it most closely matches the weight, power, and driving capabillites of your average Magnum Opus.

I started the clock and took off down the road, engine roaring. 9 minutes later, looking at the waypoint I had set, I could see I had driven a total distance of 9.32 km.

However, that was just the length, now we must find the width.
It's safe to say it would take about 8 minutes driving east to west, so applying my earlier findings to the new equation using guestimates would give me 8.26 km.

Using advanced potato science to multiply the length by the width gives us a grand total wasteland dimmension of 76.9832 km2.

76 km2

Some other things compared to the size of Mad Max...
Sim City.....................................4km2
Skyrim .................................37.1 km2
GTA V.....................................47 km2
Far Cry 2..................................50 km2
Just Cause 2.....................1,035.5 km2
Sydney Austrailia................12,140 km2
Your Mom...........................50,350 km2

Honestly I've spent dozens of hours in GTA V just driving so I'm not worried about it gameplay wise

The size of the map doesn't really bother me as long as they made it feel large. Off the top of my head I can't think of any recent open world games that felt small regardless of the measured size.

However, I will say that whatever the size of the world is you can't really compare it to other games directly. It's a desert, with lots of empty space in between things, it's not some map (like skyrim) filled with tons and tons of things every few steps. So by that logic I sure hope it is indeed much larger than those other games because they were more dense with things to do. Mad Max should feel emptier and be larger if there is a ton of content.

I really hope that the desert is really endless going on forever and getting more difficult like I've read about. I loved in TES Morrowind how it was an island and you could swim forever and there were no invisible walls.

What I love about this desert is that it's a bit decieving to people at first glance. You look at it and you instantly think "This looks empty. What do I do or where do I go?" Then you drive a couple meters and suddenly the ground caves in and you're exploring a ghost town that was buried underneath til now. You explore and find some cool items to customize your car and find your way back to the desert land. This time you come across an abandoned outpost in the middle of no-where where you lay eyes an elevator shaft. You get it to work and take it down, it leads to a cavern. You don't know what's down there... so much adventure already. Welcome to the map of Mad Max lol

Yeah on the 1 hour gamespot video recently released on youtube the dev or rep states the game engine randomly generates enviorment beyond the map boundries. You run out of gas and die from randomly generated storms eventually so its not infinite but you can def drive into the sunset till you die.
It's pretty much like Red Faction: Guerilla's free fire zone. You can drive and drive but chances of living beyond a certain point are slim. In RF: Guerilla you get rained on by heat seeking missiles, you can try to out maneuver them but it's hard as hell. You only last a few seconds realistically, I expect MM to have a similar thing going.

after seen all of the live gameplays the map is definetly not as big as just cause 2. they needed about 5 minutes from east to west and 8-12 minutes from north to south so its about the size of gta 5 but a little bit bigger.

It doesn't stop but a huge sandstorm trashes your car if you're out there for too long. ( I think) lol.

the map does not end yes and there will be some kind of treasure to find but there are no outposts or stuff like this if you drive out of the game area. its just random generated landscape and you could fall into a random canyon and thats it. There wont be unlimited random convoys or bases etc. If you drive out of the map you are on your own, there is nothing but storms and heavy terrain.

I believe it was said, (don't quote me on this) that you will find harder and harder enemies out there. Not bases and Convoys, but just other cars out there.

(EDIT) someone on the forums said that this was the case, only proof they had was from one of the mad max streams which we will have to go back and watch to find.
