Get ALL the scrap! Or not?
I have this 'leave nothing behind' habit where I get into a road battle with random cars, and either up beating up the drivers on foot or harpooning them out of their seats. Both situations leave me with only slightly damaged vehicles left on the road so I spend several minutes just ramming them to death and leaving the car to gather scrap. Seeing as I am only on the 4th location, including the tutorial section, I imagine this will be happening a lot.

Question is: is all this extra scrap worth my time or should I just leave these cars behind and get on with whatever I was doing? They say scrap will be in abundance later in the game but I can't help my 'gotta have it all' mentality

I take it all, its the only way to upgrade faster, waiting later would be too late and would block you from progressing further as you need to upgrade your car and that to a scrap cost.

I'm with you...a little OCD with it. You'll need the scrap for sure to upgrade stuff and some achievements and Griffa's depend on it. Some projects can't be built without scrap either. Best thing I think is build the cleanup crews first and foremost so they can pick it up for you and destroy the vehicles in the most efficient way possible. I often just thunderpoon or shotgun blast every vehicle's fuel tank I can find. Also some disabled cars drop a gas can. Use that to blow them up. There are also cars with loads of I think they're called thundersticks? Anyway if you kill those guys you can pick up those weapons and destroy just about any car. In all cases the crew will get the scrap for you (region dependant so build the crew projects in each stronghold). If you have the armory projects built then you'll never really run out of ammo. Just keep fast traveling back to the stronghold to replenish.
No it is not. You get what 1-15 scrap if you are lucky.

Keep playing a bit more, unlock all the areas, and upgrade the strongholds to have the road crews clean up scrap from wrecks. This will save you a lot of time. Also don't be afraid to use your sniper rifle or shotgun ammo for blowing up the tanks behind cars. You waste ammo, but again, if you've upgrade the strongholds you can easily fast travel to them and get your ammo back.

Once you upgrade the strongholds you will get random amounts of scrap, and from all the territories you capture as well.

Focus on getting the loot location scrap because if you are trying to get as much scrap or get 100% achievements that is what will really burn your time as there is nothing you can do to ease or bypass that.

No, just remind yourself that this isn't a survival game where every bit helps. Focus on upgrading strongholds and don't get bogged down by the trivial time wasting things.

But, but, but, it's the trivial things in life that make life more worth it to live :-)

Collect as much scrap as possible. It will only help you in the long run. As already stated if you can upgrade the strongholds to collect it for you it will be that much easier to do. I've already beaten the game and I am going around collecting all the scrap just, you know, for something to do in the wasteland.
