SAVE-BREAKING BUG: ***DO NOT*** SHOOT ANYTHING IN UNDERDUNE!!!
Putting this up to save some people pain and will be doing repeat posts about it until there's some action in the way of a bugfix; there is a raised bridge in the Underdune quest with a lone Buzzard on foot across the chasm.

Whatever you do, DO NOT SHOOT THE THUNDERPOON at him/her/it - it will also destroy one of those chain-cranks (it will disappear completely, leaving a blank space where the crank was) on the other side of the bridge which you need to use to lower it.

You will not be able to proceed with the quest, and you cannot voluntarily cancel the quest. Your save will be useless, and you will need to start the game again.

Hopefully this gets addressed soon, but in the meantime refrain from indulging the urge to shoot the Buzzards in Underdune as you likely have repeatedly on the surface :)

Unfortunately not; from what I can tell most missions you can bail out of - this one you can't for some reason. And yeah, am starting to set up multiple saves with my current playthrough. Lesson very thoroughly learned :)

Aren't there 10 ausosaves anyway?

sadly not, the game only uses one... overwriting for the win... NOT!!!

Note to self - occasionally check the forums for game-breaking bugs before you encounter them, rather than after the event... :(

Good work Blackthorne. Hopefully you'll save some people the misery of losing their entire save.

Be sure to report the bug, folks. There's a slim chance it might get patched. (I won't hold my breath, but if it's not reported then it definitely won't get patched.)

Prior to when you posted this, I used the Thunderpoon to destroy the crank holding the bridge. For me, it fell and I just drove across and completed the mission without issue.

That said, it looks like it's a bug that isn't 100% reproducible. I'd still second your warning that people avoid doing this.

Now, if I could just find a workaround for the bug where if you die or fail a mandatory racing mission (ie Gastown) then your controls are disabled and you have to kill the application and restart the game to continue.

As the OP says, when you get into the "underdune" don't fire the thunderpoon when you see a baddy.
The mission is given to you by someone in Gastown.
It's unlikely you'll wander into the underdune before the mission directs you there, but it's possible. (I don't want to give any spoilers, but clearly from the name and what's been said already, it's a place you drive around in that's under the sand.) The underdune is a sand-burried airport in the Dunes area (can't remember if it's just called The Dunes. Something like that. North East of the map.)

I'm one of those people who saves a ridiculous amount, "just in case", but I didn't see any option to save in Mad Max. If it's possibly to save in one of the other autosave slots they don't make it obvious.
Maybe I'm just being thick. I think it's more likely just another bad game design thing though.

I also have a game breaking bug wuth dim rims convoy. I just can't continue any further now. Devs need to release a patch where you can restart a chapter or mission or something.
