thanks for heads up
cant u just go back to early save you did
also good idea to do save before each mission
Unfortunately not; from what I can tell most missions you can bail out of - this one you can't for some reason. And yeah, am starting to set up multiple saves with my current playthrough. Lesson very thoroughly learned :)
Good work Blackthorne. Hopefully you'll save some people the misery of losing their entire save.
Be sure to report the bug, folks. There's a slim chance it might get patched. (I won't hold my breath, but if it's not reported then it definitely won't get patched.)

That said, it looks like it's a bug that isn't 100% reproducible. I'd still second your warning that people avoid doing this.
Now, if I could just find a workaround for the bug where if you die or fail a mandatory racing mission (ie Gastown) then your controls are disabled and you have to kill the application and restart the game to continue.
The mission is given to you by someone in Gastown.
It's unlikely you'll wander into the underdune before the mission directs you there, but it's possible. (I don't want to give any spoilers, but clearly from the name and what's been said already, it's a place you drive around in that's under the sand.) The underdune is a sand-burried airport in the Dunes area (can't remember if it's just called The Dunes. Something like that. North East of the map.)
Maybe I'm just being thick. I think it's more likely just another bad game design thing though.
