You can play the game without having seen the films.
There's no solid connection to any of the films, mostly the game is just set in the world of Mad Max. And not directly influenced by any of the stories in the filmes.
Of course, having seen the films you will have a greater understanding of Max and his reasons for why he is.
But, the wasteland and more importantly, the "event" that caused it has never really been truly explained. There's been some talk about it in the films, but nothing really in depth.
And, the game does reference a few things from the newest film, but nothing is directly related to the events of Fury Road.
classic comment. Great soh! lol
