Tips on the melee combat?
I'm really struggling with the combat, and I don't understand since it is very similar to the Batman games, and pardon my arrogance but I am a master in that game's combat (I once got a combo of 800+ in Arkham City :P) but I just can't counter in this game. I am hitting the counter button and it's a hit and miss...mostly miss. Am I missing something here?

Bah, no response to this and I still can't do anything with this stupid counter system. I give up.

This game feels exactly like batman and sleeping dogs combat to me. The whole trick is countering as you know. Try countering as early as possible, even early sometimes seems to work. Remember you cannot counter the red indicators, those you must roll out of the way for, only the yellow indicators can be countered. And sometimes Max blocks as a counter so it doesnt look like you did anything, but he did prevent damage by putting his fists up.

Completely brand new controller actually, just 1 week old. I really want to like this game but I just can't counter at all. Sometimes I know I've hit the counter button and Max is locked in the punching animation and won't do anything. Or the camera is zooming in on a finifher move and I don't see the enemies attacking me. It's really frustrating me.

Have you tried watching some gameplay videos?
When I was struggling with the top end achievements, (12 kills without being hit, 25 hit combo & 8 kills in fury mode) I found it helpful to watch them to improve my technique a little.

Maybe get someone else in with a fresh perspective to give it a go?

Try a few fights with the keyboard instead?

u have to be postioned in front of attacker to counter. if he hits u from side or behind u have to rotate and then counter.keep in mind all time that max is human he is not superhero and adjust ur playstyle accordingly. dont let me get started on bataman u can counter from ur back nonsense

Slow down. The combat is similar to Batman/Mordor etc but Max won't leap 5 metres to the nearest enemy or interupt an attack animation to counter. You just need to slow down and make more considered moves. If you are surrounded by enemies roll clear to get in a better position. Don't just mash the attack button, each click corresponds to a move, so hit the button once for each punch and be prepared to counter an attack or roll clear.

It locks you into some attack animations, particularly for heavy attacks and won't let you counter. Just have to be cautious about how you attack.

This. That "locked in" moment can drive you up the wall but you can opt to roll and dodge in some cases to prevent it. Especially useful against a large number of attackers.

The things made a very big difference for me was:

Remap the draw/aim weapon to other than the right mouse button, the default setting means if you hold the button a fraction too long it draws the shotgun instead of blocking and you get hit.

The next to attack give themselves away really early, you can block before the 'flag' appears on screen even in 'Fury' mode.

Anything you can block in 'normal' mode, you can block in 'fury' mode with the exception that in fury mode you can also stop incoming attackers by hitting them if you are quick enough, and enraged attacks can be cut off when they are 'working' themselves up the same way, by hitting them.

You're not locked in, you just don't have as much time to block/parry as in normal mode.

Don't hold the right button down, tap to block, hold to get killed.:sectoid:

I am struggling with the combat on this as well for the achievements and it is pretty frustrating. I thought the countering would be just like in Batman but it isn't.

When fighting a group I try to pull a few away into a larger open area.
Punch & Roll is my basic fighting style.
Try to pick out 1 guy and beat him till he is down. When another attacks, roll away. Rinse/Repeat until they are all down.

Actually, it is. Very similar to Batman's mechanic. but a lot easier.
After completing combat challenges with freeflow in all 4 rounds with different characters, Mad Max was unbelievably simple.

Rotate mouse to keep your attention on yellow circles and red warnings and don't hesitate to execute - that's all tips really. :)

Only mouse and keyboard here, so others may help with controller mechanics better. But you start off with very few moves and counters. As Max gets more abilities unlocked it gets a bit easier. with reversals, shiv kills. But also get prepared for getting locked into pile drivers and some end chain mechanics that will have you hitting the block button knowing that you are about to eat that weapon attack and there is nothing you can do about it.

Don't know if its possible, but try remapping your block button and see if that works. At least it will rule out a non-responsive button. Hope it all works out, Never played the Batman games, but have had lots of fun with this one.
