Max never had a daughter pre-game. Rather, he had an infant son. It' has yet to be explained who the girl in Max's visions are. Likely we'll get some insight to this in the upcoming prequel movie.
Either way, it's pretty clear that Max doesn't deal well with personal loss.
The stories of Mad Max are pretty blurry regarding continuity indeed. But it is actually explained in canon who the little girl in Max's visions in Fury Road is. It is in fact Glory. Vertigo released Fury Road prequel comics written by George Miller himself and in these comics Max meets Hope and Glory, and the story of Glory's rescue is very simmilar than in the game. Max also travels to Gastown to get a V8 engine and meets Hope there, that asks him to rescue Glory from the Underdune. The story of the game is very similar to the prequel comics, and I think, does a very good job of setting up Fury Road. Max looses Hope and Glory, regains his Interceptor and leaves for the Plains of Silence. I actually beleve, that the Planes of Silence are in fact the ancient seabed streaching beyond the territory of Gastown in the The Big Nothing. And it is in this place, Max spends a long time, wandering completely alone "Fixing whats broken" he forgets his voice, and after some time returns to the Citadel in Fury Road. I beleve he tells Furiosa and the other women in the movie, to stay away from the seabed saying "Theres nothing but salt". Max knows this because he has been there, a long time, those are the Plains of Scilence he has returned from.
I had two encounters that resulted in these visions, after I had completed the game and wondered if I had made a mistake. Seems like it was part of the end game to get us all thinking on Max's behaviour towards these two characters. Morals and how we abide by them! saying that though in a linear game where the outcome is determined? What else can you do but play along.
