I played about 30 hours, then watched fury road which made me play again. They complement each other nicely but aren't essential.

The game has some references to the movie in places and characters. You don't need to watch the movie though to enjoy the game.

You're definitely not. I didn't hate the movie, in fact I quite enjoyed it but it was overrated as fu*k. If the Academy nominated this for Best Picture then why not nominate Transformers? It's just like a Michael Bay film anyway, all action, mediocre acting (apart from Charlize) and barely any story.
Has anyone on here ever seen a Mad Max Movie other then Fury Road?

No in actuallity Im pretty sure Fury Road takes place after this game. But you definintly watch at least the first two Mad Max movies before playing the game. The second The Roadwarrior is one of my favorites of all time.
