that's kind of odd to me as Mad Max is not that demanding at all.
So regarding your problem: it's either CPU or PSU. Motherboard can reset you computer if CPU reaches TDP and works beyond that for a certain period of time, again without temps I can't tell you much about it. Or PSU, when your GPU works at full power at P0 and then you're getting a hard reset or shutdown that could potentially mean a PSU problem (either lack of power or a failing unit).
What to do: check temps (with HWInfo for example) when playing Mad Max, check GPU/CPU loads and GPU core frequency, do the same with a game that never crashed your PC (GTA V like you said, for instance) and compare results. Also you can check out Windows Event Viewer, hard resets and crashes are considered critical events, so it could potentially say you something.
Very odd cuz mad max is a very old game, and considering all of the other games I've tossed at this rig, AND the fact that cpu NEVER gets hotter than 50deg while game running (one core was hovering near 60 at most, but even that's very low compared to what I've had it going at before) and it froze system. (Run 2 monitor setup so have temp display on 2nd monitor at all times)
The oddest thing of all is while the CPU is running 'cool' (for the most part) and the radiator for its liquid cooling never gets hot to the touch, and both GPU were warm but not beyond what I would expect, the system does what one would expect from overheating gpu: weird glitchy pink/purple effects, complete graphics lockup, then gpu recovery/windows reset - and game would crash/exit out.
I feel there's something with how mad max is utilizing the gpu that makes the gpu think its heating too much and borks out. I guess running game on lower settings might help, but doubt it,
System is 3 years old but it is perfectly able to run anything 'new' (4790k + 2x 980TI in SLI + 32gigs of ram, game on SSD, OS on separate SSD)
I feel this is a software issue with how it interacts with hardware (Was this game optimized for AMD cards maybe? I've heard of similar issues with the reverse setups= people having weird issues on games optimized for Nvdia while using ATI cards)
On the above note and MAYBE related (Due to graphics issues) is in dark areas (IE buzzards caves, the tunnels where the rig was, etc) the game should 'fade' to proper light into dark areas yet it goes nearly pitch ink black and the flash light has near to no effect at all, but other areas like when you out at night or inside a dark area that isn't a cave, the light works fine... I know random but still)
I know some of the Nvidia drivers have been ad for many games...even the current 417 version is causing a few problems...some people reported that ot changed the fan settings causing the GPU to get hot ...I switched back to the 399 version lately.

If you're running AMD.. try any older driver to see if it fixes it.

Don't overclock your CPU or GPU either
