Overheating question
I bought the game and it runs super smooth and looks really nice. The problem is it overheated and crashed my computer twice. No game has ever done this for me. Games that push my computer usually just stutter and lag. I'm planning to give my computer a thorough cleaning again this week, and will eventually upgrade if possible.

I did a quick search online and noticed other people saying they had the same problem.

I just want to know if it's possible that the game might be the main part of the problem, or if the issue is 100% my computer. I can run Crysis 2, Far Cry 3, all the Deadspace games, GTA V, all without performance or heat issues.

ALSO while I did try to search for this, it's very likely that I scrolled past a thread with the information I need, so sorry if I'm wasting space by posting.

EDIT: I did some more research and even though no other game heats my PC anywhere NEAR Mad Max, I do think based on what I've read that it's all hardware problems. I do however find it strange that the game performs so well, while other games that push my computer don't seem to heat it, and that's something I'd like some more information on if anybody can point me in the right direction.

it over heats using a personal fan profile?
that's kind of odd to me as Mad Max is not that demanding at all.

You're writing about overheating, but didn't tell a thing about temps or your hardware... This game optimized very good, even on low end machines it performs rather well, but yeah, it loads GPU to the maximum.

So regarding your problem: it's either CPU or PSU. Motherboard can reset you computer if CPU reaches TDP and works beyond that for a certain period of time, again without temps I can't tell you much about it. Or PSU, when your GPU works at full power at P0 and then you're getting a hard reset or shutdown that could potentially mean a PSU problem (either lack of power or a failing unit).

What to do: check temps (with HWInfo for example) when playing Mad Max, check GPU/CPU loads and GPU core frequency, do the same with a game that never crashed your PC (GTA V like you said, for instance) and compare results. Also you can check out Windows Event Viewer, hard resets and crashes are considered critical events, so it could potentially say you something.

Have you got vsync on?

this is a necro i know, yet today, after running the game on my system I am having the same problem, 3 times (twice while the game was alt tabbed/minimized) my pc has gone though very odd issue where it has all the symptoms of overheating, but my monitor only reports heats of (max) 70c (Ive run it hotter on other games, and even tested on gtav with settings cranked to max)

Very odd cuz mad max is a very old game, and considering all of the other games I've tossed at this rig, AND the fact that cpu NEVER gets hotter than 50deg while game running (one core was hovering near 60 at most, but even that's very low compared to what I've had it going at before) and it froze system. (Run 2 monitor setup so have temp display on 2nd monitor at all times)

The oddest thing of all is while the CPU is running 'cool' (for the most part) and the radiator for its liquid cooling never gets hot to the touch, and both GPU were warm but not beyond what I would expect, the system does what one would expect from overheating gpu: weird glitchy pink/purple effects, complete graphics lockup, then gpu recovery/windows reset - and game would crash/exit out.

I feel there's something with how mad max is utilizing the gpu that makes the gpu think its heating too much and borks out. I guess running game on lower settings might help, but doubt it,

System is 3 years old but it is perfectly able to run anything 'new' (4790k + 2x 980TI in SLI + 32gigs of ram, game on SSD, OS on separate SSD)

I feel this is a software issue with how it interacts with hardware (Was this game optimized for AMD cards maybe? I've heard of similar issues with the reverse setups= people having weird issues on games optimized for Nvdia while using ATI cards)

On the above note and MAYBE related (Due to graphics issues) is in dark areas (IE buzzards caves, the tunnels where the rig was, etc) the game should 'fade' to proper light into dark areas yet it goes nearly pitch ink black and the flash light has near to no effect at all, but other areas like when you out at night or inside a dark area that isn't a cave, the light works fine... I know random but still)

Sounds like the graphics driver ...it's not the game...there has been no changes to the game in years.
I know some of the Nvidia drivers have been ad for many games...even the current 417 version is causing a few problems...some people reported that ot changed the fan settings causing the GPU to get hot ...I switched back to the 399 version lately.

If you're running AMD.. try any older driver to see if it fixes it.

Don't overclock your CPU or GPU either
