Well, they know if they want more customers or not.
It can't be helped, I will vote with my wallet against this one still.
Thanks anyway!
There's a difference alright...
Good news:
The Steam version of the game runs mostly smooth and is optimized well, meaning in my experience, there are no frequent micro-stutters or constant massive frame drops on modern hardware above recommended specs and during gameplay. However, hardware and graphical settings will still be factors that varies performance from one player to the next.
Bad news:
The game forces an online connection for Denuvo, so after a time of not launching the game online, you will receive that notification on Steam that asks for the game to "go online."
None of this may bother everyone, but that doesn't mean it should not be mentioned anywhere, even if it does NOT bother a single individual. It's still interesting knowledge to have because it shows another way Denuvo can impact the consumer's experience, so they can think about it before deciding to pay for a game.
I think about that. What if they just update the denuvo service and make it worse?
This behavior is what left me hating any DRM service. Securom was terrible, it required permanent internet connection AND the disc installer in the driver all the time. Since then, I refuse to use DRM, and only buy on steam if there isn't the same on GOG.
I also follow "denuvo games", a curator which shows clearly which games still have denuvo and notify when they drop it.
The funny thing about Denuvo is that if it was just a multiplayer game like Steep or Vermintide II, where gameplay is primarily online-focused for that reason, there would be less players caring about it tagging along.
However, the main issue is playing a singleplayer game, which is where Mad Max comes in. Verifying an internet connection for scrap collection has been dropped, so what is the point of Denuvo anti-tamper on Mad Max's Steam version now, especially when the Origin version does not have Denuvo? Pirates are already playing the game for free. Initial sales ended years ago, so the additional DRM is useless. Steam DRM is already efficient, especially in regard to VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) if companies still want to keep using DRM. Otherwise, they have their own launchers. Regardless of that, games continue to get cheaters and pirates. :-)
On the other hand, if game companies are using Denuvo anti-cheat for multiplayer games and not Denuvo anti-tamper for singleplayer titles, many consumers would have less to worry about with additional DRM ruining their experience, while pirates will always get to have fun without paying a penny. When Denuvo is poorly implemented, it would mainly contribute to stuttering and some amounts of frame drops, which varies from whatever game is played. In a game that is already poorly optimized, Denuvo can definitely make gameplay experiences worse.
I believe that no matter how much Denuvo tells companies they will keep improving security, piracy will never end, and I know Denuvo is aware of that. Game company leadership is also to blame for accepting Denuvo. The people wearing the suits wasted money on investing in Denuvo because it did not meet its goal at preventing piracy, and no other method of DRM will do so. That's the cold reality some of them will probably will not accept.
What good is slowing down piracy when pirates will still wait for the moment to pirate a game? If anything else, it will just keep increasing piracy.
