What are you supposed to do with the boxes during storms?

It said to grab it with the harpoon and pull it with the vehicle, but it wouldn't break. I shot it with my shotgun, but the scrap just blew off in the distance the moment it popped out.

When you harpoon the crate park your car so that the crate is on the right side of the car, so that the car is blocking you and the crate from the wind and random crap flying through the air. You can then exit the car fairly protected and run up to the crate, then hold A and smash it open by curb stomping it and quickly collect the scraps.

Is it worth it? From experience, collecting random bits of loot I find by smashing cars only gives three to six scrap per piece.

So I had another storm and I hooked a box but the only way I could break it was the shotgun and the moment I got out of the car, some weird lightning tornado blew everything up before I could even pick it up.

Am I supposed to tow the boxes somewhere safe and wait out the storm or was I just in a really bad spot?

You were just unlucky. Lightning is random and is one of the storms where you should seek shelter. There are other storms without lightning and you can hunt during then. An easy way to do it though is to wait near a camp, wait for the storm to come and spawn some boxes, then go into the camp. The storm will go away and you can loot the boxes without any danger.

Yes it is worth it, 100 scrap for each piece the crate drops, which is normally 3-4

Wait till the storm passes...then look at the HUD...you'll see the location of at least 3 crates....drive up to them....get out and 'kick' it open...go to the nearest one first because they will disappear once they are off the HUD.
If one is stuck on a ledge...then use the harpoon to pull it down

Or use harpoon during storm to pull containers in some place protected from wind, get out and kick them.

what does the game say....doesn't it show a 'prompt' of what to press?
..it's 'A" button default for an Xbox360 controller on the PC...haven't you ever had to 'kick' a door open in a camp yet?

I believe there is an achievement for 'snatching' crates out of the air during a storm...but I just wait it out and drive up to them...if I drive towards them during a storm they will keep 'blowing' farther away....so I wait.

i can tow 3 or 4 per storm to a safe spot MAN thats a lot of loot

Yeah it's A on the controller, but I've ran up to them and I wasn't given any prompts and I tried pressing A near it, but nothing happened. Maybe the box was in a weird angle, I don't know. I'll try again on the next storm.

On all 3 crates?
Most likely it's your placement....because the crates don't lie entirely flat many times...it just a matter of getting yourself(Max) in the correct place.

you can always run the 'verify the integrity of the game files' thru Steam to fix any corrupted files(doesn't take long)....if you think it's the game screwing up.

No on only one crate. I haven't been able to grab all three just yet and the last storm I found was the one where I commented about the lightning tornado destroying them.
