Deep Friah question

no spoilers please, i haven't finished the game yet.

So the main storyline leads me through the other three strongholds but skips Deep Friahs? Just straight to Gastown... stuff happens... then to continue the story I need to go build $hit at Friah's house?

Since the game didn't tell me to go there I skipped it. Max is busy enough coddling and building crap for everyone else.
Is there a mission that tells me to "Go see Deep Friah for blah bla" or am I supposed to just pull up at his stronghold like some wasteland handy man?

No there's no mission that introduces you to it, you just go at some point.

And his stronghold takes substatially fewer parts to improve. I think more of the projects were a single part, all of which can be found in the junkyard territory

You don't need to do Deep Friah's to get the Big Chief which is my main objective since game start. I leave everything undone as possible. You can get the BC (and the Interceptor) at about 50% game completion.
