But really, the only thing you really need is max alteration. That thing is overpowered
I haven't found a single part of the game where I needed protection... It's a lot about personal preference.
To OP: Since I don't see you saying this is about multiplayer or singleplayer, I would ask which one is this character? Because especially if it's multiplayer, you can always coordinate with a friend, or even make some friends while playing random games.
Also don't worry about experimentation, later in game (catacombs), there is an option to acquire and use an "Orb of Rebirth", which will allow you to reallocate all your skill points.
personally, I think the best spells in the game are return projectile, sleep, transmute metal, regeneration2, and phase door. If you have those spells, then you can breeze through the game easily with any build. Other good spells include create portal, latent life, improve armor, improve weapon, and antidote.
13 sword
6 constitution
11 armor
13 fire
8 light
12 healing
12 alteration
I'm pretty much happy with the spec right now. With my final 6 points I will have 14 sword, 14 fire, and 10 constitution. Perhaps 8 constitution and 14 alteration, depending how good invisible is.
In SP you'll get one chance to re-spec your character, and in MP I think the respec is purchasable. So if you built something up early and change your mind, you'll have a chance to correct it. I personally didnt use any alteration or protection and had an easy time getting through SP; so even though some people say one line is OP, I think any line is if you put a fair few points in it.
Different enemies have different wea points, so really even if you spec up one type, you'll always have a tougher time with certain situations; such as not having fire or axes to take on tree-type creatures.
