I dunno man. Try getting your info from a couple of different sources so you can make a judgment call on whether to jump in or not.

The general consensus is this: yes it's still alive, but it's nowhere near it's old-time glory days.

So, my advice is this on finding your sources:

1) Subscribe to the FFXI newsletter or some official form of information on this game and see what the company and the dev. team are doing with it. The team that did Chains of Promathia was good, so if you see that it's them doing an expansion, it might be worth it.

2) Read from the community. This is PARAMOUNT in making a decision. I suppose you are doing that here and now, which is good, but really ask around forums like Allakazham and the like and find out which are the better FFXI servers out there to play on. That would be the best indicator of whether or not to jump in the FFXI bandwagon.

Good luck, and happy gaming.
I used to play FFXI back from 2004 to 2009. I've visited since and they've made things way too easy, and it REEEAAAALLLY hasn't aged well.

Consider that the engine IS from /2004/ and that there's no jumping, no voices, the cutscenes have minimal amount of animations (it's mostly people with their mouths flapping forever) and the majority of the players are Japanese and you're likely to have a bad time especially coming from WoW, a game that continues to see regular patches and constant expansions.

But as someone who used to love FF11, FF14 is FAR superior. You can jump, combat is visceral and fast-paced, there's player housing, multiple mounts (in 11 you have one mount and you have to access it from a stable at each town's gate), and everything is much more crisp and clean. It's a newer, better game.

If you end up coming to FFXIV, send me a message on Steam and I'll hook you up with my guild (called free companies). We have 500 members and growing and we're always accepting new members. :)
I went FFXIV and are already with a free company. D3SU actually. its a fun game though and already am enjoying it more then what i did XI
ffxiv is wow, so if you dont want to play wow, don't play XIV, its a better looking wow with a tenth if not less of the content

Really?
I haven't played XIV but I've seen videos on YT and it seemed to me to be a more graphically apt FFXI.

Is it really that much like WoW?

I suppose it has similarities, but FF14 has stories that you can get engaged in. The main questline is a Final Fantasy story, through and through, so if you've ever enjoyed a FF game you'll enjoy this. Crafting is also far more in-depth and (in my opinion) enjoyable than any other MMO, as it plays a lot like fighting a mob.

The community is pretty friendly as well and it's not hard to jump in with a group and just... well, wander about doing random encounters, called Fates. The dungeons are more involving than WoW, with a bit of exploration and some puzzle solving. Getting geared isn't a huge hassle, neither is grinding for a Mount or other higher tier items.

And the Art style is very... Cheery. Bright colors, whimsical designs for both enemies and the environment. It may not seem like much to some, but a distinct artstyle makes a world of difference to me when the rest of the game is on par or better.

And the key feature is you're not restricted to any classes. At level 10, you can choose to play any of the other classes in the game and enjoy their storylines, which are enjoyable at least on par with the Class storylines in Star Wars the Old Republic, without the hassle of less enjoyable sidequests as all the quests in FF14 have a good deal of effort put into them, making them fit into the lore and setting. To me, this made the entire game world seem more Alive and I felt quite good completing these side quests.

One especially, where a Fishermans son asks you to repair his Father's Compass so he may take to the sea again was very touching. It ends up being more complicated than just fixing a compass, but I'll leave you to find out about that.
Hmmm....

Sounds like you are very engaged in FFXIV. You've made probably one of the more interestingly humane yet fun descriptions I've ever read about the game. I'm almost tempted to try it.

But yea, I can see how it is thus somewhat similar to WoW in that, 1st, there seems to be plenty of work and care put into the design, and 2nd, the cartoonish-lore style of things. At least that's what I think you were going for in your narrative.

I do miss FFXI still. Not as much, of course, but still a small recognizable bit. I might take some time to check out FFXIV, but from the read and feel of it, it would seem to me that FFXIV is more of a different beast (and perhaps a smaller one at this time) than a continuation of FFXI. I might give FFXIV a chance one of these days. I mean, what the hell, right? :)
Once FFXI no longer has a subscription fee I'll definitely be picking it up again.

i agree. i just dont have the time to devote to a monthly payment to sit down like i did when i was in school.
I'm considering it. But damn I'm not looking forward to: Unlocking SJs, Grinding, Doing all the Genkai's all over again, Having to get Abyssites all over again, Etc..

Kinda hard to get used to after I was running around as a 99 WAR with some real nice stuff/Ukon. I kind of ditched my account back in 2013.

At that point the game was just a jarate match with parsing during VW.

I'm also hearing Physical Melee are no longer as in demand these days.

That stuff has been adjusted to be less time consuming now, aside from the abyssea KI but the stuff there is a cakewalk with the new equipment now.

Also with the trust magic you can do stuff with AI controlled npcs filling in various roles.

VW you can lowman now, but I mainly do it to make gil from the REM items.

Physical melee are wanted but War has kind of been left behind compared to other melee jobs like Sam, which is still pretty broken. SE hasn't gotten round to adjusting certain jobs yet.
