i used to play ffxi the first few years it was released and loved it - Ive been playing ffxiv the past few months now and ive already made my mind up i wont be resubscribing, would love to try ffxi out again though.
There are a few workarounds: https://steamcommunity.com/app/230330/?id=1532943988 has the link to repurchase the full edition of the game with the expansion included and I think if you want to play via Steam that may be the way to go.
There is a guide from 2018 about the setup: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails.
I found a good reddit discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/98c2ss/is_still_worth_playing_final_fantasy_xi/.
I got a message when I tried to play my install saying I need to transfer an existing PlayOnline account to a regular Square Enix account: http://www.playonline.com/homeus/polshift/.
So I think PlayOnline is done.
There are warnings the game may not work on some versions of Windows, especially 10, but also the game might work but may take some tweaking to make it run okay.
The game requires a subscription and that is here: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/envi/charge.html. I saw a comment that the Steam version is not easier to create an account for. It just gives a key to apply to the account, and going through the regular process subscription is required.
I have heard from several places that the old story and the music is rich, but of course the population is not as much. I think if I will invest more money in FF, I might go with XIV at this point instead. What do you all think about that?
Midnababy has a terrific video about XIV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goS0ydKNeAA
But if you are still committed to playing this game, I'd recommend checking this:

Does anyone else have any more info to share? It seems there are enough people around who still want to play this, even in singleplayer.
Tac
But when they introduced book burns there was a huge drop in skilled players. People leveled so fast that they didnt learn their j obs and had no skills once reaching max lvls.
So was wondering, is this the case or has the game ... lvld out where players lvl their skills learn their jobs to make parties run smooth, also.. do people still party for exp? like old days? is Juno still the place to be and hub of commerce, are there still white mages selling teleport? ( loved that) is the community still the nicest in the world? i played xiv a bit but so boring, all weapons and armour is the same, can only use one weapon. just a shadow of XI.
is it still fun... im asking old school players who play now. they will know all the changes for a great answer.
