Playable Offline?
Which modes can be played without being connected to the internet

I would suggest turning Steam to offline mode or disconnecting your internet before opening the game to confirm that.

Anything involving VC should not be accessible in that state.

I didn't spot that you didn't have the game. Did you have a mode in mind? MyCareer and MyTeam are definitely online.
