ammo mechanic is a little awkward
The ammo mechanic as is, has turned out to be pretty awkward for me. I have no problem producing tons of ammo, but they go through ammo just about every big fight. I can't possibly keep up with restocking ammo on my whole missile group every fight, that would be a considerable amount of gameplay in a given evening.

My ask is an item for belt slot that is a 2+ slot quiver that holds things you want the units to restock themselves.

My suggestion is that the belt slot can be one of the following -

1- tiny beltpack that holds medkits. the crappiest are 1x2, the best are 9x3 with a 3x3 splint kit slot.
2- tiny beltpack that holds ammo. the crappiest are 3x1, the best being 5x5. The npc will try to fill them with whatever ammo matches their ranged weapon.

FUNCTIONALITY
a - if an npc has one of these packs, they will share ammo from any other NPC in their own group that has matching ammo or medkits in the their pack. this allows you to have a single ammo/medkit runner in the party
b - if a medic npc heals a party member that has a medikit belt on them, they will use the medikit of the injured player first before using their own. (standard military doctrine)

If you're running out of ammo so fast then equip your rangers with stackable backpacks. Around half full, you can cram around 6 stacks of 9 heavy bolts, which is 6*9*20 = 1,080 bolts per character. I can't imagine going through that each fight unless you're fighting Leviathans.

As for the restocking idea, it's interesting, and it seems to be mechanically similar to the AI grabbing resources from the ground or containers. I'll admit it's annoying to constantly re-stock ammunition, but a much simpler solution is to increase the stack size and weight (say, double the inventory space of heavy bolts, increase the weight and number of bolts by X). There may even be a mod hidden somewhere that does just that.

I really want them to grab ammo from the boltbox. That should actually not be that hard to do. Maybe I'll mess with it and see if I can create a beltslot item that acts as a quiver.

I'll admit, micromanagement can get a little tiring. Particularly if you're using any kind of mod that increases the size of your squad.
