0.98.13 Missing characters from squad on save. [workaround]
0.98.13 (imported game)

Every new save after a certain point hasn't saved any of the character details from one of my squads.

In the save summary its lists them as been absent 11 men instead of 16.

On loading the saves, the squad is there but it is empty and all of the characters in it are absent from the game.

This includes the starting character, not just those hired.

Saves are in /zip here, last uncorrupted save and then all saves from that session subsquently missing the ppl.

Edit, preview link doesn't work - download is still valid.

2nd Edit: Followed FiftyKal advice, found the missing squad in the editor (Forgotten construction set > 'open any' file tab, open suspect platoon scroll down and look for missing characters names in list) Created a new dummy squad in quicksave and renamed broken platoon from old save and copied over quicksave dummy.

Possible cause of issue is the use of the a faction name that is already in use by NPC (didn't realise), each squad is saved with faction name at time of save ie if one changes their faction name their old squads will retain that label in the save system... this includes the original Nameless_0 prior to 1st custom name.

Load the Save, Create a new Squad and quicksave the game, then go the below folder;
...\steamapps\common\Kenshi\save\quicksave\platoon

now find your platoon name, usually nameless_0 or higher, if you've renamed your faction it will be faction name and then the number;

So lets say nameless_0 has disappeared and the new squad you have created just before sacing is nameless_1
Easy way to see is which by the file size is 1kb
If you have multiple squads you may need to open them in the editor to see which is the offending one, anyway.
Simply delete the empty squad file ie: nameless_1 and rename nameless_0 file to nameless_1.

Load game and all your squad members should be back, even in their same squad name, just the platoon file name used will be different.
Fixed the problem 99% for me, only issue is that it may happen again with any newly created Squads, however same fix works again every time.

You use any mods?
That_Geek_Kid Mar 17, 2018 @ 2:32pm
If you create a new squad and add the affected squad members to it, it should let you save them again. I was lucky and only lost a few hours to this. Just keep checking the member number on your save games to be sure all members are being saved.

i also just lost an entire squad (exactly 10 characters) without realizing it. then i tried to load old saves and they werent there either ;(
i had 39 population from an old save game i saved after recruiting them all, but that was about 15 days behind my current save, so i dont want to lose 15 days and had to just live with the remaining 29.

really sucks to have bugs like this.

Hello, i had the same problem, i lost 2 VERY strong characters. SO i've test some things, and i think i've found a solution. Only the members in an old empty squad were disappearing (When i say empty, i mean squad i've pre-created to prepare a future use to it like workers team, guards team ect...), so i decided to delete these old squads and create new ones. Then my characters were not disappearing anymore. But maybe the empty squad you import in a new game will create this "void" bug in the future saves you do with new members in these squads. Hope that helped ^^

Can anyone give a step-by-step how to for an idiot like me? I lost a squad of 7 characters decked in my best gear after a 40+ hours save so I'd like to recover them.

I can try,

Kenshi rout folder something like:
*\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kenshi

In here you will find
Save folder and "forgotten construction set.exe"

In the save folder look for the broken save and then in a subfolder called platoon look for the name of your missing squad.

eg
*\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kenshi\save\curiosity\platoon
where curiosity is the name of my save in-game and in folder.

In platoon your looking for your broken squad, nameless_0 will probably be one of them, after that yopur looking for factionname_X where faction name is your customised name and X is the number of that squad.

If you have multiple squads then open the forgottenconstruction.exe and on right hand side there is a button called "Open any" just click through any pop ups till you get there.

Using the open any button select the suspect platoon file and scroll down the list in the window till you see the names of your missing characters. Should be able to identify which is the correct squad in this manner.

Once you know the broken platoon make a note.

Now start kenshi load the broken save, go to squads tab and create a new blank squad (don't put anyone in it). make a note of its name eg factionname_X. Now quicksave. Exit kenshi.

Go back to the kenshi folder open up the quick save folder and locate the new empty platoon you just created. (should be 1kb size). make not of its name and delete it.

Go to the platoon folder of your broken save, locate the broken platoon and rename it the same as the one from the quicksave. Now copy that file into the quicksave folder.

Start Kenshi, load quicksave and if everything went well your characters should be there. To tidy up go squad page and delete any empty squad tabs that might be left over. (shouldn't be any).

Save game and check via load screen that last save has the correct number of characters in the summary window.

Best of luck.

Kind of late to the party, but unfortunately this glitch persists, so I hope you are still alive. My platoon folder is empty, any clues why this would happen?

Make sure your looking in the right save folder location, it can now be customised through settings.

Save games that really struggle with corruption or missing zones eventually delete themselves.

Last line of the log file will read something along the lines of save deleted.

The fix above helps repair a partial save from a previous full save but it can't rescue a full deletion.

Hi,

Got the same problem when i try to load my main save from 2 years ago.
I had 3 squads, only 1 remain now, i can see the two others in the squad menu (on the right) but they are empty, in the old save, the count description is right (33), if i save it drops to 18.

Checking with forgottenconstruction.exe i can found the platoons with the squad menbers in it, they have a different name than ingame (MyClanName_8 and 9 on the files).
What is odd is the squad still in game is named No-Name_0 in the files (Freemens in game).

I've tried importing, reset squad position and the method but creating a squad in game doesn't create a file No-Name_ or whatever (nothing with a 1kb size) so i cannot swap.

(I'm using the 256 menbers something mod and a few other little ones like strengh benchs, map and a armor set)

Any ideas ? (Sorry for my english)
