If someone was to make a full sized weapon like a falling sun for instance, and the guy making them only had a small or traders backpack that can't fit that weapon, then the primary weapon slot will always cater for it so that it can be moved to storage. The result means that slot is always emptied to allow for this failsafe space & the newly crafted weapon is put in here first, no matter the size.
That's my theory anyway lol. It helps keep the job going or means you can craft at least one of the items you were after.
Unfortunately my theory fails when it comes to armour, as they feel the need to dump their helmets in most cases too no matter what armour you craft lol ;o)
It can be slightly inconvenient. I have gone to explore on a few occasions then realised/remembered my guy has no main weapon, or other guys have no headgear. Then had to run someone back to the outpost to grab all that gear lol ;o)
I guess you didn't understand my initial post ;o))
