You can't order units to to patrol forever in vanilla, but at least one mod exists for that purpose:

I wouldn't expect such mods to work in between cities, though. You need to build special "wayposts", and likely they need to be fairly close together. As in, if they don't all count as part of a single player base, then probably your units won't path between them.

I was told this game is a successor of the X3 game system, a space game where we can do all we want. I can see it's absolutely a lie. I'm sad.
The issues i found is here because we only have one map, probably. Empty map. We can craft a lot of things but automatism is not as good.
Maybe i need to get rid of the X3 games of my mind to have fun with this game? So sad. I was tricked.
Hey, why not a Kenshi 3 in space based on the X3 ideas?
The one map in the game is actually quite full. Each of the different zones feel really different to each other. I really recommend exploring it, tons of cool stuff (Just avoid the southwest and the southern coasts, higher level areas). Each of the different main factions in the game are also pretty fleshed out.
