I've been thinking about this in the context of AI in real life. Physical pain is needed in alive things to keep the body safe from further harm, but robots would be able to get spare parts easily, so they would not need that. Emotional pain however is another matter altogether. Without emotional attachment fe. to one's family you might cause them harm. So for AI development it would be beneficial to program something like that in, or what you have created would be a terminator.
