What to farm in "Tiny Settlement" in "Border Zone"
What is good to farm here, if you built 3 shacks before prospecting.

Is cactus good to farm here?

Also, how to get water at that place for farming, will a trader in a city sell it to carry?

Also, How can you make the Cactus into Cactus Rum

Many thanks

You are not ready to build anything yet I suspect. As soon as you start building you are going to get raided. Can you walk into a Dust Bandit camp and easily beat them all?

A Black Dragon ninja raid is tougher than a bunch of Dust Bandits. head to Squinn and buy a building there to start with and start building up the skills of your crew.
If its arid then cactus will grow, and cactus doesn't need much water and will grow at 10% rate without water (everything else would instead die). Most of the map has at least 10% water, aside from dead areas. You can buy water from most cities, bars will sell water as will waystations but you might want a pack animal as water is 10kg per barrel and quite large.

Cactus rum simply needs to be researched and then you need cactus and water to run the machine.

Arid zones are also good for wheatstraw and hemp.

If I remember right, it's basically only riceweed that has a problem growing in the Border Zone (a bit too dry, but that's what hydroponics are for). Everything else grows fairly decently.

If you can't place down a well, build some rain catchers and some storage tanks. The nearby waystation should also have some water for sale.

Research rum production, build a rum cooking station (food section), and some rum storage. Grow cactus and collect water, and assign someone to work at the rum station. For best profits though make grog out of wheatstraw, rum sells for 400-600 cats, grog sells for around 1000 each.

I usually end up growing rice and greenfruit to make gohan for food (on non skeleton runs), and wheatstraw for some grog for the occasion I need cash. You can fit a few hundred grog into a pack garru/bull, the real trick is finding merchants with that much cash on hand.

*Going pure vanilla talk here by the way, mods fix a lot of the above "issues" like moisture farms for water, or vendors have more money, or better hydroponics.

There's a waystation South of you. Water you can buy up between there and Hub's 2 stores. It looks like barrels on the trade screen. Rum requires a bit of researching first. Fiddle with crop placement to get the highest yields, (same for stone, since you'll be needing construction kits). You can always go to an earlier save if you can't lay the base out like you want.

Many thanks, you guys are all pros.

I'm hiring 2k mercs just now, and attacking dust bandits, until my team of 8 all have like 10 defence and attack.

I'm going to cash in a character for 8k bounty once per week to keep income to pay for mercs. In Sho Battai picking the character up over the jail fence, plus hiding there so slavers don't slave them while in jail.

I've tried to build the 3 shacks far apart, so hopefully if a raid comes, hopefully they stand at an empty shack while I can try move to another one.

You can always just leave the base for a while till the attack cancels itself.

If your characters have 10 defense and attack, it might be easier to just buy your food for now. Mercenaries are good for base defence, but they are more of a temporary solution then a real problem solver. Try and level your skills up to like the 30's range.

^-- This.

Ten characters, with needed pack animals for trading, all at 20+ Toughness with equitable Skills and gear are needed, IMO, to start a decent base with an ability to protect oneself a bit. (Not great, but can work. Anything terrible... one can just make a run for it and wait them out or come back with Mercs. :))

(Personally, I wouldn't start without 30+ skills, depending on the numbers I had, and Crossbow/Turrets/Materials/Research, see below:)

Just for ref, possible use:

Research everything... first. (Buildings, Turrets and Tier 3 Walls are A Good Idea ™ to have ready) Stockpiling enough materials to build a base that can defend itself is possible, too. Make storage boxes on top of all the purchasable houses in The Hub, for instance, and trade there and in surrounding Towns for what's needed. Stockpile all the stuff, get some pack animals, find your spot, and you can start building what you need right away, no mining/resource gathering/crafting needed. Return to one's stockpile with a few characters and the pack animals to load back up for more supply trips. Rinse/Repeat

One can build multiple Wells.

Before starting a base (best practices) have a couple of "Runners" with good light armor, (acid resist) and Run/Sneak Naruto-running that can speed off to a "certain shop" and buy needed blueprints/stuffs without fear. Keep them on a schedule to check for new sale items. (They can outrun/outmanuever anything in the game. You'll just have to dodge-run from the top-speed Elder Beak Things or train them into enemies if you get unlucky. Don't forget certain gear increases run-speed, too.)

Being able to craft all the weapons/armor is a bonus. Even if one isn't crafting a lot of top quality stuff, at least one can have decent armor to help out with the raids. (Samurai)

Allying with the Shek is A Good Idea ™ for that region. Take out the Dust King to stop Dust Bandit Raids (or don't, for a constant supply of junk items :)). Turn in ALL Dust Bandit bounties (group leaders) to the Shek for points. You can farm them to do this without ever engaging in a named NPC to trigger a World State change.
