Mining in Hub or Squin
Before I go through setting it up, are you able to mine any nodes (iron or copper) near the Hub or Squin and have the workers auto haul to a storage in a house in the city? Playing vanilla.

Yes in both cases. Use the two small shacks near the entrance in Hub (upgrade to a storm house when you can afford it). Use the house near the exit in Squin, though be warned that Squin does seem to have some problems with autohauling, so Hub is generally the better location for that particular pursuit.

Perfect, thanks. I'm trying a no outpost game, and figured if I could set up shop around there I could fund my small mercenary team with a couple workers.

Stoat is a good one for a no outpost base, I've done it there a bunch of times. They got all the shops you require to make it work.

The Iron isn't too far from the walls, Skimmers being the main threat to miners. But Skimmers also being useful in that the meat can be cooked, claws sold and foul meat used to feed animals/Hivers. So it's actually nice to offset some food costs and a tiny influx of cash for the claws.

You can use a loot order to get someone to auto collect the good meat, so even when you aren't there with your main team you could still be getting some free meat.

Lack of shops and their distance is the only thing that kills Hub. Not sure about Squin.

Interesting. I haven't done to much in that area yet, so I'll check it out. Where are the ore nodes near Stoat? They're close enough to auto haul from into the city?

I am currently living in Squin, tech Level 6. Doing fine. Miners mine outside gate of Squin haul back to storage in Squin.

NOTE: there are 4 longhouses available to the player in Squin.

I also am not building an outpost.

Thanks for the info. The iron plates station is from a mod though, right? I don't think any iron plate benches fit inside in vanilla. Other than that, the actual hauling of ore you're doing there should work in vanilla?

I am not creating iron plates. I only have a Plate Beating Station which uses Iron Plates to make Iron Plating.

I purchase Iron Plates from town and nearby waystations/towns. I am not crafting intermediate tier resources only finished products. The sole exception is Iron Plating. It requires Iron Ore. This is the one and only time I have mined since I started game. I am on day 346 and I mined just enough iron to make the Iron Plating for required armor.

NOTE: I should have typed earlier. I am playing a game without building an outpost of any kind. I do not mine to sell ore (copper or iron). I went my first 200 days without mining a single item. It was not until around day 240 or so I decided to mine a little iron (needed Iron Plating) for better armor.

You cannot build an Iron/Steel refinery in town. That is the only drawback to my play through. I am ok with that.

Oh! Got it. I misunderstood when watching the video. That's really helpful, thanks!

I edited my post as you were typing I suppose, I have never been able to build a refinery in an NPC town. If you want to refine, you need a player created outpost in my experience.

Yeah, that's my understanding too. I don't want to refine. I'm mostly going to mine for supplemental cash to fund my adventuring team, but wanted to keep it as automated and safe as possible for the squad members staying home.

I may do some light crafting, mostly for supplies and food. I've been purchasing all my gear so far.

I played one game a year or so ago where I only used equipment (armor/weapons) I looted or purchased. I purchased all my food, (as I am doing in my current game also). That was an interesting game.

Not too far off topic, and might as well ask before I give it a try, but don't think this is much of a spoiler if anyone hasn't found it yet... Can the player use the abandoned 'HN spy house' in Hub to put in a research bench etc?

I did notice the comfy beds in 'spy shack' can be used, that is much appreciated!
Thanks dev! ;~)

I have never tried it, but I do not think so as you (player) does not own it.
GIJoe597 Apr 20, 2021 @ 7:06am
I ran over to the Hub to test it. You cannot, as you get the notice, you do not own this.
jerrypocalypse Apr 20, 2021 @ 7:19am
You could buy one of the cheap shacks near that for the research bench and just use those beds if you need rest prior to being able to craft your own. Or use the Shinobi tower for beds if you're a member.
