Does it makes the game harder, if the numbers are turned off? I don't think so. There are so many sources of income that missing loot from a random fight is just a marginal loss of potential income.
I would consider it more a loss in QoL. Having these numbers is actual feedback playing the game. I could play with sound turned off either. It just removes feedback and atmosphere but doesn't make the game in anyway harder to play.
