DEX exp is also awarded per hit so low damage blades are better for training with, I think a rusty junk ninja blade is the best training weapon (has better range than a wakizashi iirc)
Unarmed attacks always count as a "max dex gain" weapon.
Weapons that're too heavy for your character grant strength XP when you swing them. With MA, you get strength XP based on how overloaded you are overall.
Most weapons with high strength requirements deal high amounts of blunt, so they tend to be poor for dex training. With martial arts, though, you gain full dex XP regardless of how overloaded you are, so you can potentially train the dex and str stats efficiently with that skill.
The catch is that attempting to train martial arts while overloaded is a good way to get yourself knocked out, since you'll move very slowly. If your enemy has any way to fight back, then odds are you won't be landing many blows.
Like You gain dex per hit, so if You have a weapon, which hits more people with one swing, You gain dex faster. Which is why certain polearms are good at it. And MA would increase the reach with levels, and also do Aoe attacks, so it´s also a good way to gain dex. Or like if You use sabres on some taunt guy - he will also gain dex fairly quick, as he´s surrounded by more people. Katanas, of course are also good as gaining dex, but most attacks are single target. Imho any weapon works for gaining dex, with the exception of the blunt weapons, the flesh and moon cleaver, the plank, and the fragment axe - and the standard polearm, while many of these gain dex decent enough, while i would probably try to bring them to 30 dex first, before switching weapons, and i rarely use blunt weapons or the fragment axe.
